Lukomir sits at 1,469 metres above sea level on the edge of the Rakitnica Canyon — the deepest untouched river canyon in the western Balkans and one of the most dramatic hiking destinations in all of Europe. This full-day small-group hike from Sarajevo takes you to Bosnia's highest permanently inhabited village, where stone houses, traditional dress, and shepherds crossing the plateau have remained unchanged for centuries.

The route follows the canyon rim across the Bjelašnica plateau — open mountain views, clean air, and a silence that very few travelers ever reach. The hike is moderate difficulty, suitable for anyone in good physical condition with comfortable trail shoes. No technical experience required. Your local guide sets a pace that works for the group throughout the full 8–10 hour day.

What to expect

Escape the city and discover Lukomir — the highest and most remote traditional village in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Your journey begins at 8 AM in Sarajevo, where you’ll meet your guide and head toward the mountains of Bjelašnica. After arriving in the village of Umoljani, we begin a scenic hike toward Lukomir, surrounded by dramatic landscapes, open highlands, and breathtaking views over Rakitnica Canyon.

The trail is moderate and enjoyable, with regular stops to rest, take photos, and fully experience the untouched beauty of the Bosnian mountains.

Upon arrival in Lukomir, step into a village where time feels slower. Stone houses, traditional clothing, and mountain silence create a rare glimpse into Bosnia’s past.

Enjoy a coffee break with a view, followed by free time to explore the village at your own pace. The experience concludes with a traditional homemade lunch prepared by local hosts — simple, authentic, and deeply rooted in mountain culture.

This tour is perfect for travelers who want nature, culture, light adventure, and authentic local experience — all in one unforgettable day.
