Quinta da Regaleira is a quinta located near the historic center of Sintra, Portugal. It is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the "Cultural Landscape of Sintra". Along with the other palaces in the area such as the Quinta do Relógio, Pena, Monserrate and Seteais palaces, it is considered one of the principal tourist attractions of Sintra. The property consists of a romantic palace and chapel, and a luxurious park that features lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions. The palace is also known as "The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire", which is based on the nickname of its best known former owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. The palace was designed by the italian architect Luigi Manini.
According to legend, there was a chapel dedicated to Virgin Mary built by Afonso Henriques after the reconquest of Sintra (circa 1093). On its ruins another chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Monserrate was constructed on the top of the hill in 1540.[2] The estate was then owned by Hospital Real de Todos os Santos, Lisbon. In the 17th century possession of the property was taken by the Mello e Castro family but after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake the farmhouse became unlivable.[3]
After Monserrate, ride through the countryside and the traditional villages of Colares, known for its vineyards and historic wine, and Janas, with its unique round chapel. Your destination is Azenhas do Mar, a postcard village of white houses perched on the cliffs above the Atlantic. Take in the ocean views, walk down to the natural sea pool and enjoy fresh fish at one of the local restaurants before riding back to Sintra.
On the way back, climb into the Sintra forest to the Convent of the Capuchos, a tiny 16th-century Franciscan monastery hidden among moss-covered boulders. Its narrow cells and doorways are lined with cork, showing the simple and humble life of the monks who lived here. A peaceful contrast to Sintra’s grand palaces. Admire it from the road or buy a ticket to explore inside.
Ride up the Sintra hills to the Moorish Castle, a medieval fortress first built by the Moors around the 9th century. Its stone walls snake along the mountain ridge, offering some of the best panoramic views in Sintra, over Pena Palace, the town and all the way to the Atlantic. Admire it from outside or buy a ticket to walk along the walls at your own pace.
End the day at the Park and National Palace of Pena, the colourful red and yellow palace on top of the Sintra hills and the most famous symbol of Portugal’s Romanticism. Built in the 19th century by King Ferdinand II, it mixes Gothic, Moorish and Manueline styles. Admire it from the park or buy a ticket to visit the palace and its gardens, then enjoy an easy downhill ride back to our shop in Sintra.
