A day tour to one of the most beautiful and historic small cities in Britain. Famous for its magnificent cathedral, castle, winding streets and old market places and with wonderful views of the river far below. Durham is not to be missed!
I can meet you at your hotel in Durham and we can go off on foot from there. Similarly with Newcastle with a short trip on the train.
Across the courtyard from the cathedral is Durham castle and as they both are UNESCO World Heritage monuments, it represents a great chance to visit two very different cultural buildings.
The city is dominated by the magnificent Durham Cathedral which dates from 1093 AD and is world renowned for being one of the finest pieces of Norman architecture in the world and one of the most fabulous religious buildings. Whilst there is much to see in the cathedral, don’t miss the chance to see the tomb of Saint Cuthbert who was teaching Christianity in Northumberland back in the 7th century.
Explore a traditional northern indoors market.
A guided tour through the old streets and lanes of Durham. It is not just grand history however, Durham has some wonderful picturesque winding streets and a renowned covered market. Perhaps you might find yourself a bargain buy or find an old pub which you might want to eat in before heading back.
A beautiful square at the centre of old Durham
Dating from the 14th century, this grand old bridge is out gateway across the River Wear and into the city.
A beautiful square with medieval houses that once belonged to the monastery before King Henry VIII did his thing.
A call but fascinating museum featuring amongst other things an incredible and almost unique Roman diploma.
