This Altun Ha and Community Baboon Sanctuary tour from San Pedro connects Belizean archaeology with community-led wildlife conservation. At Altun Ha, explore ceremonial plazas and temples while your guide explains how the city’s location supported trade between the Caribbean coast and inland Maya communities. The experience then moves to Bermudian Landing, where black howler monkeys—known locally as baboons—live within a landscape protected through cooperation among seven villages and private landowners. Learn how the sanctuary maintains forest corridors, supports coexistence between people and wildlife, and became an important Belize conservation model. Listen for the howlers’ powerful calls and observe the forest with a better understanding of the community work behind it. What makes this tour unique is the shared preservation theme. Altun Ha protects the physical evidence of an ancient civilization, while the sanctuary protects a living species and the habitat it needs.
