The journey to Lamanai is one of the defining features of this Maya ruins and New River boat tour, not simply transportation between Belize City and an archaeological site. Travel along the New River through northern Belize, watching the riverbanks and forest canopy for iguanas, crocodiles, monkeys, and tropical birdlife before arriving at temples rising from dense vegetation. Lamanai is especially meaningful because the community was occupied for more than 3,000 years and continued into the period of Spanish contact. Along with monumental Maya architecture, the reserve preserves evidence of later history, including Spanish church remains and a colonial sugar mill. . Our guides will meet you upon mainland arrival in Belize City. After an hour’s drive from Belize City to Orange Walk, you’ll hop on a boat that takes you on a picturesque boat ride to Lamanai via the New River. Keep your cameras handy as there will be many opportunities to get pictures of monkeys and other wildlife.
