Karato Market is Shimonoseki's bustling seafood market on the Kanmon Strait, nicknamed the "fish kitchen of Kanmon". It is especially famous for fugu (pufferfish), and on weekends the market turns into a lively street-food festival where you can pick up fresh sushi and sashimi to enjoy by the water.
The Kanmon Bridge is a striking suspension bridge spanning the Kanmon Strait, connecting Honshu at Shimonoseki with Kyushu. From the viewpoints below and the nearby Mekari area you can admire the graceful structure and watch ships pass through one of Japan's busiest and most historic waterways.
Akama Shrine is a striking vermilion-and-white Shinto shrine overlooking the Kanmon Strait. It enshrines the young Emperor Antoku, who perished in the 1185 Battle of Dan-no-ura, and its Ryugujo-style gate evokes the legendary undersea palace. The grounds also hold memorials to the Heike clan.
Jokamachi Chofu is the beautifully preserved former castle town of the Mori clan. Wander its atmospheric streets lined with earthen samurai walls, old temples and the elegant Chofu Mori residence and garden, where the quiet, historic ambience transports you back to the Edo period.
Hinoyama Observatory sits atop Mt. Hinoyama, offering one of the finest panoramas in the region. From the summit, reached by ropeway or car, you can take in a sweeping view of the Kanmon Strait, the graceful Kanmon Bridge, the city of Shimonoseki and Kyushu beyond.
Ride to the top of the Kaikyo Yume Tower for sweeping 360-degree panoramas over the Kanmon Strait, the city of Shimonoseki and across to Kyushu.
Drive out to the photogenic Tsunoshima Ohashi, a long bridge stretching over brilliant turquoise waters to Tsunoshima island - one of Yamaguchi's most scenic and famous coastal views.
Visit Kozanji, a tranquil Zen temple in the historic Chofu district, home to a National Treasure Buddhist hall and serene grounds steeped in samurai-era history.
