Day two starts at 3:00 AM. Your 4WD jeep rumbles out of the accommodation and onto the volcanic sand plains of the Tengger Caldera, one of the largest calderas in the world. At Bukit Kingkong or Seruni Point — whichever delivers the clearest view — you'll watch the sun drag itself over the horizon and flood the caldera with orange light. Mount Semeru, Java's highest peak, looms in the background. Then it's down to the crater itself: a 45-minute climb up the rim with sulfurous plumes drifting past and the caldera floor stretching out below you. This is one of Indonesia's most-photographed sunrise spots, and it earns every frame.

The third day belongs to Ijen. The trek begins at 1:00 AM from Pos Pendakian Paltuding — a two-hour hike up through the dark with your local guide and gear in hand. What you're hiking toward is one of the rarest natural phenomena on Earth: the blue fire of Kawah Ijen, produced when pressurized sulfuric gas ignites on contact with air. As dawn arrives, the acid crater lake — turquoise, vast, and utterly surreal — comes into view. Your local guide has made this climb hundreds of times and knows exactly where to position you for both the blue fire and the sunrise.

• Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness
• Due to government policy, a local health certificate is mandatory to participate in the activity. It should cover body temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and the Ishihara color blindness test. Government hospital certificates (around IDR 55,000) are available from Monday to Saturday from 7 am to 12 nn. Private hospital certificates (around IDR 250,000) can be obtained daily from 8 am to 8 pm. Certificates are released on the same day of check up. The certificate should confirm fitness for trekking, stating no respiratory or heart diseases. Only locally- issued health certificates in Bahasa are accepted.
