Visit Swayambhunath, one of the places you should not miss while in Kathmandu. Walk around the main stupa, spin the prayer wheels and look at the small temples and shrines around the hill. From the top, you get a good view over Kathmandu Valley. Keep an eye out for the monkeys too—they are everywhere around the temple, which is why many travelers call it the Monkey Temple.
Visit Patan Durbar Square in Lalitpur, the old royal city known for its beautiful Newari architecture. Walk through the historic square and see traditional temples, courtyards, stone carvings and detailed woodwork. It is a good place to slow down, look around and get a feel for the history and everyday life of the Kathmandu Valley.
Visit Pashupatinath, one of the most important Hindu temples in Nepal, located beside the Bagmati River. Walk through the temple complex and see the many smaller shrines, traditional buildings and religious activities taking place around the river. The main temple is open only to Hindu visitors, but the surrounding areas can be explored by other visitors.
Spend some time at Boudhanath Stupa, one of the most important Buddhist sites in Kathmandu. Walk around the large white stupa with the Buddha’s eyes looking over the city, spin the prayer wheels and watch Buddhist pilgrims making their way around the stupa. You can take a slow walk around the main courtyard, visit the monasteries and observe daily religious activities. The streets around Boudhanath are also worth exploring, with small shops selling Tibetan and Buddhist items, cafés, restaurants and local businesses. This is a good place to take a break during the tour, enjoy the atmosphere and simply watch local life around the stupa. If you visit later in the day, the area can become particularly lively as local people and pilgrims gather around the stupa.
