The two bridges are entirely differ - ent in shape : the surface of one bridge is horizontal , whereas that of the other is vertical , but are connected with each other . A return visit to Zhouzhuang always turns up something interesting that was missed on previous visits . Today Zhouzhuang is an extremely successful tourism resource .

  Zhouzhuang Boat

  The most delightful attractions in the village is riding on one of the gondola - style boats that ply the canals crisscrossing the village and linking it to the busy network of lakes and rivers , the life blood of the region . We can tour the town by boat , serenaded by women gondoliers as they pole along with a single rear - mounted oar that works back and forth in a unique swaying motion . The boat affords a great vantage point from which people may look into the rickety homes that hang over the waterways , with stone steps running into the canals where young boys skim stones . Relaxing on a boat through the town is an unforgettable experience .

This grand residence in Zhouzhuang spans over 1,800 square meters with six entrances and more than 60 rooms, each serving distinct functions from hosting guests to daily recreation. The architecture and furnishings reflect the wealth and lifestyle of a prominent Jiangnan family, symbolized by the couplet: “Sedan chair from the inside, boat from home.”

  Shen's Residence in Zhouzhuang Water Town, built in 1742 by a descendant of the wealthy Shen Wansan, is a well-preserved Qing Dynasty mansion. Covering over 2,900 square meters with more than 100 rooms, it showcases traditional Jiangnan architecture, including a water gate, elegant halls, and intricate carvings. Once damaged during the Cultural Revolution, it has been restored and now stands as a symbol of Zhouzhuang’s historical wealth and culture.
