The architecture and furnishings reflect the wealth and lifestyle of a prominent Jiangnan family, symbolized by the couplet: “Sedan chair from the inside, boat from home.”
Shen's Residence in Zhouzhuang Water Town, built in 1742 by a descendant of the wealthy Shen Wansan, is a well-preserved Qing Dynasty mansion. Covering over 2,900 square meters with more than 100 rooms, it showcases traditional Jiangnan architecture, including a water gate, elegant halls, and intricate carvings. Once damaged during the Cultural Revolution, it has been restored and now stands as a symbol of Zhouzhuang’s historical wealth and culture.
**Quanfu Temple**: Built in 1086 during the Northern Song Dynasty, Quanfu Temple reflects Zhouzhuang’s deep Buddhist heritage and features a striking five-story tower added in 1987. It stands by Baixian Lake as a spiritual and visual landmark offering panoramic views of the town. **Nanhu Garden**: Also known as Nanhu Qiuyue Garden, this lakeside retreat showcases classic Jiangnan garden design, especially stunning in autumn. It provides a peaceful setting for cultural appreciation and scenic enjoyment, often enhanced by traditional performances like Kunqu Opera.
