The city was built in 1569 by the Third Mughal emperor Akbar. Akbar met the Muslim hermit Chishti, who lived in the village of Sikri. Akbar decided that Sikri's location was auspicious and made it his capital. He directed the construction of the Jami Masjid (Great Mosque; 1571), which is nearly 540 feet (165 meters) long and contains an ornate tomb attributed to Chishti. The mosque's southern entrance, the massive gateway Buland Darwaza (Victory Gate; 1575), is one of India's greatest architectural works. The monumental gateway is made of red sandstone and is adorned with fascinating carvings.
