  Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence The cathedral was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio and construction began in 1296. The dome was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and completed in 1436. The exterior of the cathedral is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink, bordered by white.   Piazza della Signoria
