9am We leave for a sightseeing tour of Old and New Delhi. In Old Delhi where we visit Jama Masjid, this immense mosque is both the largest in India and the final architectural extravagance of Shah Jahan with a courtyard capable of holding 25,000 devotees. The highlight of the tour is an exhilarating bicycle rickshaw ride through the bustling and colourful streets of the fabled shooping bazaar, Chandni Chowk (Silver Street).
We drive past Red Fort citadel and reach Raj Ghat, a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi is a simple black marble platform that marks the spot of his cremation on 31 January, 1948. After lunch New Delhi Sightseeing.
In New Delhi visit the 12th century 230- feet high Qutab Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site gracefully handcarved for its entire height of 234ft.
Later we visit Humayun’s Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (own expense) an outstanding monument in the Indo-Persian style, contact sidered to be the precursor of the Taj Mahal.
India Gate (memorial to the Indian army soldiers who died in the world war I), the Rashtrapati Bhavan(formerly the viceroy’s residence) and the Parliament House - The Parliament House is 173 m in diameter, has a colonaded verandah and the roof of the outer circle is supported by 247 pillars. You can wander around this awe-inspiring structure before leaping in with a prior permission from the Government of India.
9am Pickup from your hotel and four hours drive to the pink city of Jaipur, founded by Maharaja Jai Singh II.
Evening take a shopping tour in Jaipur with your guide who can help you find precious gemstones, silver jewelry, bangles, clothes, blue pottery, and textiles.
Meet your guide at your Jaipur hotel in Jaipur at approximately 8am. Begin the tour by visiting the Amber Fort. The Amber Fort is situated on a ridge just outside Jaipur City and is beautifully reflected in the lake below. Inside the fort, you will encounter the world-renowned Jai Mandir temple with its dazzling Sheesh Mahal hall of mirrors. The walls and the ceiling of the Mahal are covered with a beautiful array of mirrors, which reflect any streak of light, illuminating the entire room.
Continue the tour by making a photo stop at Jal Mahal around 11am. This Rajput style "Water Palace" sits in the center of the Man Sarobar lake. The lake is often dry during the summer, but the winter monsoons frequently turn it into a beautiful lake filled with water hyacinths.
Next, you will visit the Hawa Mahal, another Rajput landmark also known as the Palace of the Winds, for more photo opportunities. The five story Hawa Mahal was built in 1799A.D. along the main street of the old city. It is a pink sandstone masterpiece with semi-octagonal and delicately honeycombed windows.
You will visit the City Palace and Ovservetory which is located in the heart of the old city. Once the royal residence of the King of Jaipur, the palace was built using a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal styles. It features carved arches, intricately crafted columns and two carved marble elephants that guard the entrance.
Time permit, shopping in Jaipur where you will find an enticing variety of goods. Some of the most popular items include precious gemstones, silver jewelry, bangles, clothes, blue pottery, and textiles.
8am You will make the 4-hour drive to the home town of the Taj Mahal Agra.
En-route, stop to visit Fatehpur Sikri (own expense) which has been described as “the world’s most perfectly preserved ghost town”. Built by Akbar in the late 16th century, it was abandoned after only 14 years and the elegant buildings of this superb walled city remain intact to this day.
Pickup at 6am early morning at sunrise we leave to explore the monumental heritage of the Great Mughals, visit the magnificent Taj Mahal (Closed on Fridays), a UNESCO World Heritage Site one of the Seven Wonders of the World and surely the most extravagant expression of love ever created. 20,000 men labored for over 17 years to build this memorial to Shah Jahan's beloved wife. It's a wealth of white marble and semi-precious stone – « undoubtedly the highlight of the tour ».
Next we, enjoy tour of the imposing Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this powerful fortress of red sandstone encompasses, within its 2.5-km-long enclosure walls, the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. It comprises many fairy-tale palaces, such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, built by Shah Jahan; audience halls, such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and two very beautiful mosques.
Early evening proceeds to a Photo Tour of Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh - the moonlit garden - believed to have been designed by Shah Jahan to view the Taj on moonlit nights, far away from the maddening crowd, the garden complex is situated on the left bank of Yamuna opposite to Taj Mahal. It is a huge square measuring approximately 300x300 m and in straight alignment with the Taj Mahal. The forestry plantations and agricultural fields provide a green forecourt to Taj Mahal and its reflection in Yamuna. Here you can witness the sunset over the Taj Mahal.
Shopping tour of Agra to explore the local handicrafts centers of the city where we can look for Agra's major handicraft products besides marble inlay work, fine quality carpets, jewelry and embroidery, brassware, leather goods, etc.
7am After an early breakfast, 7-8 hours drive to the legendary temples of Khajuraho, built in the 9th and the 10th century are an incomparable experience. They are known for their nagara-style architecture and erotic carved exterior. They were built to honor 2 religions, Jainism and Hinduism.
Meet your personal guide at your hotel in Khajuraho at 7am and begin your day with a transfer to the UNESCO World Heritage site known as the "Western Group of Temples.” Start your visit with the Kandariya Mahadev temple, the most popular and beautiful massive structure. It is a magnificent piece of artistic sculptural work decorated with over 870 statues and carvings.
This is arguably one of the largest and most typical temples as opposed to the Chausath Yogini temple, the earliest temple of the group that has survived.
After lunch 3-Hrs drive to Janshi and visit the village of Orchha. Visit observe the 14 memorials as well as well-preserved palaces and temples. Enjoy a buffet lunch at 1pm before heading to Orchha Fort, a complex located on an island on River Betwa.
The historic town of Orchha, nestled on the banks of river Betwa, was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Rajput Chief, Rudra Pratap. Here, the river Betwa splits into seven channels, also called the Satdhara. Legend goes that this is in honour of the seven erstwhile Chiefs of Orchha.The ancient town seems frozen in time, with its many monuments continuing to retain their original grandeur even to this day. Here you will find some of the most fascinating temples and palaces that will help you realise a childhood fantasy – travelling back in time !
After Orchha, drive to the Jhansi Railway Station to board the train back to New Delhi. Dinner will be served on board before your arrival.
