Atlas Studios is a film studio located 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) west of the city of Ouarzazate in Morocco. Most of the property lies in the nearby desert and mountains. Many sets from the filming of various movies remain in place and, because of this, the studio also operates with guided tours and has become a popular tourist destination. The company was founded in 1983 by entrepreneur Mohamed Belghmi. Since then it has been able to expand, thanks to reliable climate and weather conditions, and because the area is of a nature that can mimic the natural environments of many countries well
Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains in Ouarzazate Province. It is the most iconic ksar (fortified village) in the Ounila Valley and a prime example of traditional pre-Saharan earthen architecture in southern Morocco. Built mainly in the 17th century, the ksar consists of clustered homes—some simple, others like miniature castles—within fortified walls. It also includes communal areas such as a mosque, public square, granaries, a caravanserai, and both Muslim and Jewish cemeteries. Historically, it served as a key stop on trans-Saharan trade routes linking ancient Sudan to Marrakesh. Ait Ben Haddou is celebrated for preserving its original architecture, using traditional materials like earth and wood that blend naturally with the landscape. Despite challenges like depopulation and maintenance needs, it has retained its authenticity and integrity thanks to conservation efforts led by CERKAS and other heritage bodies.
