This white, three-story structure with a tower in the middle is encircled by wood-carved windows of various sizes, allowing the breeze to flow freely in and out and providing a wonderful sense of open space. Outside, you'll discover vestiges of old springs encircling the castle, from which the city's name originates (the word for "springs" in Albanian is kroje), which also represent the city's historical status as an agricultural center prior to the emergence of trade and artisanal industries.
Muzeu Kombtar Gjergj Kastrioti-Sknderbeu, designed by Pirro Vaso and Pranvera Hoxha, was opened at Kruja Castle on November 1, 1982. The museum is situated atop the renowned Kruja castle, which historically served as Arberia's capital. Three times in a row, the Ottomans lost heavily while attempting to take the fortress; nevertheless, on the fourth try, they were successful.
The Kruj castle, or Kalaja e Krujs in Albanian, served as the focal point of Skanderbeg's uprising against the Ottoman Empire. The National Skanderbeg Museum, the Teqe of Dollme of the Bektashi Islamic Sufi sect, the ruins of the Fatih Sultan Mehmed mosque and its minaret, an ethnographic museum, and a Turkish spa are all housed inside the castle.
An ancient mosque in Kruj, Albania is called the Murad Bey mosque (Xhamia Muratbeu) or the Varosh mosque (Xhamia e Varoshit). It was constructed in 1533 and is now an Albanian Cultural Monument. It is located in the old Derexhiku Bazaar in Kruje, which was formerly known as Akce Hisar during the Ottoman era. Ottoman Albanian beys constructed it.
