The museum protects archaeological objects found by the inhabitants of Coscomatepec in the surroundings. The idea of having a space to exhibit these interesting pieces came to Sergio Alonso Estévez, a resident of Coscomatepec who was in charge of gathering the collection, forming the civil association and promoting the space. The municipal library provided the physical space where the museum's permanent collection is displayed, made up of more than 300 cataloged and documented archaeological pieces. The objects belong to the Totonac and Otomi cultures, and were made of ceramic, stone and obsidian for the most part.

The quarry stone -with which it was built- and the top of its arches give it an unparalleled view. In 2014 the building was declared an Artistic Monument by the Ministry of Public Education. The Orizaba City Council acquired the property in 2015.
