Travel in luxury, air-conditioned vehicles and get around all the sites your group is interested in visiting within the extensive mountainside archaeological complex before returning comfortably to Athens.
Leaving Athens (from the pick-up point that you specify) our journey begins via the National Road to Delphi. On our way to Delphi we shall pass through the city of Thebes, where we shall visit the city's modern archaeological museum. From Thebes we head for the picturesque village of Arachova where we shall make a short stop for photos. From there we travel down to Delphi which in ancient times was known as the navel of the earth. In Delphi we shall visit the Temple of Apollo and the Delphi Museum. The Delphi Museum houses impressive ancient finds, such as the Charioteer of Delphi statue, the Sphinx of Naxos and the statue of Antinous. Following the visit to the archaeological site, you may have a meal or a coffee before starting our return trip. On our way to Athens, we will again pass through the village of Arachova to take in the magnificent views, as the village is built on the southern slopes of Mount Parnassus. From there, if you wish, you can buy hand-woven rugs or blankets, handmade pasta or the village's famous cheese. We return to Athens late in the afternoon, where your driver shall return you to the pickup point or any other point you wish on the return route.
At the foot of Mount Parnassos, within the angle formed by the twin rocks of the Phaedriades, lies the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, which had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. Delphi was regarded as the center of the world. According to mythology, it is here that the two eagles sent out by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the navel of the world ,met. The sanctuary of Delphi, set within a most spectacular landscape, was for many centuries the cultural and religious center and symbol of unity for the Hellenic world.
Located between the ancient site and the modern city of Delphi, the Archaeological Museum features a fascinating collection of finds from the site, including paintings, statues, votive offerings and stars. The exhibits are displayed in chronological order and are arranged in 14 rooms.
Today's small town of Delphi (population 2,300) is now a gathering place for hotels, hostels, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions. It was founded in 1892, when the village of Kastri, which had grown up in the area of the Temple of Apollo, moved to a new location one kilometer west to allow the excavation of the ancient site. This is a good base for exploring the surrounding area.
In winter, wealthy Athenians like to visit the mountain village of Arachova (population 800), on the northern slopes of Mount Parnassos, a few kilometers east of Delphi. The old stone buildings house old-fashioned hotels and hostels with traditional décor and small romantic taverns serving local specialties such as chelopites (forma pasta) and formaéla (grilled cheese). The village is known for the flokati fluffy rugs made there, which you will find in shops all over the city.
