7,742’~2,360m ∙ 3 mi~4.8 km ∙ 3-4 hrs After a restful night at the hotel, we begin our trek from western side checking in at the Londorossi gate. The trail with gently ascend through the montane forest until you are welcomed into camp under the Climb Kili banner with tents set up and your personal belongings inside. Tonight’s camp is nestled in the Kilimanjaro rain forest at the Mti Mkubwa which in Swahili means Big Tree.
11,500’~3,505m ∙ 4.9 mi ~ 8km 5-6 hrs We continue on the trail leading out of the forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. In the afternoon we follow the Shira ridge the vast high altitude desert plateau where the first views of Mt Kilimanjaro open on the horizon and the landscape is a magnificent contrast from the departed rain forest.
Elevation Gain: From 3,505m to 3,850m Trekking Time: 3-4 hours Distance: 7 km Habitat: Moorland A shorter trek day that involves a gentle walk across the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth, with optional acclimatization hikes in the afternoon. This day helps your body adjust to the altitude.
Elevation Gain: From 3,850m to 4,200m Trekking Time: 3-4 hours Distance: 7 km Habitat: Alpine Desert The route now steers north towards Moir Hut, located at the base of the Lent Hills. This area is less traveled and offers a serene and remote hiking experience. Optional acclimatization walks are available in the afternoon.
Elevation Gain: From 4,200m to 4,020m Trekking Time: 5-7 hours Distance: 12 km Habitat: Alpine Desert Trekking across the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro, this day involves a mix of ascents and descents. The terrain is rugged, and the views of the Kenyan plains to the north are spectacular.
Elevation Gain: From 4,020m to 3,800m Trekking Time: 5-7 hours Distance: 8 km Habitat: Alpine Desert The route dips down before climbing again towards the Third Cave. The variation in altitude aids acclimatization while offering diverse landscapes and possible wildlife sightings.
Elevation Gain: From 3,800m to 4,800m Trekking Time: 4-5 hours Distance: 5 km Habitat: Alpine Desert A steep ascent to School Hut where you will rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. It's crucial to hydrate and rest adequately on this day.
Summit Elevation: From 4,800m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) and descent to 3,820m Trekking Time: 6-8 hours to summit, 6-8 hours to descend Distance: 6 km ascent, 12 km descent Habitat: Arctic The summit day starts around midnight, aiming for Uhuru Peak at sunrise. After reaching the summit, the descent follows the same path back to Barafu for a short rest, then down to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.
Elevation Loss: From 3,820m to 1,640m Trekking Time: 6-8 hours Distance: 10 km Habitat: Rainforest The final descent takes you through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where successful climbers receive their summit certificates.
