Discover a Pristine, Eco-Friendly River:
The Chitose River headwaters are sustained by zero-CO₂ hydropower and are part of Lake Shikotsu, which has been ranked Japan's No.1 water quality for 11 consecutive years.
Underwater, light reflections create a golden meadow effect as aquatic plants sway in the clear currents.
At times, the water visibility exceeds 20 meters, revealing dappled sunlight filtering through submerged trees and a diverse aquatic ecosystem.

Wildlife You May Encounter:
8 species of aquatic plants, including some designated Natural Monuments.
Fish species: Ezo Ugui (Hokkaido dace), Aburahaya (freshwater minnow), carp, Itou (Japanese huchen), Numachichibu (freshwater goby), Tōyoshinobori (stream goby), and Suji-ebi (grass shrimp).
The friendly Suji-ebi shrimp will even hop onto your hand if you hold it still!

What to expect

The Chitose River, flowing from Lake Shikotsu, is home to Japan’s purest water. Why not immerse yourself and experience it firsthand?

What You Can See & Experience:
Summer: Swim over lush green aquatic plants, and spot various fish such as Ezo Ugui (Hokkaido dace).
Autumn: Witness the Hime-Masu (landlocked sockeye salmon) making their way upstream!

Comfort & Safety First:
You'll wear a dry suit, designed for diving, which keeps you completely dry so you can continue sightseeing right after your adventure!
Even if you're not a strong swimmer, you can hold onto a floatation device, and the dry suit provides natural buoyancy, ensuring a safe and relaxing experience.
Our experienced instructors will guide you through the underwater wonders of Shikotsu National Park.
