More than 1,200 years have passed since Dachau was first mentioned in documents. So a lot of history(s) for a city tour Dachau. And there are turbulent times behind today’s great county town. Dachau already served as a popular summer residence for Wittelsbach residents, famous landscape painters shaped the former artists' colony at the turn of the century, Dachau became the epitome of Nazi terror 1933-1945 when the first German concentration camp was set up, and today, with almost 50,000 inhabitants, it is one of the most popular migration sites in the Munich metropolitan region. A guided tour of Dachau with me offers you a good overview of the different facets. At the end of a guided tour of Dachau, the unobstructed wide view over the Munich gravel plain to the Alps is of course not to be missed when the view is good.

In the 16th century Dachau became the preferred country residence of the Munich court. Under Duke William IV and Duke Albert V, the building was expanded into a powerful castle complex consisting of four wings. The highlight of the equipment of this hall is the Renaissance coffered ceiling. It is one of the most important creations of its kind in southern Germany. The coats of arms of Wittelsbach's clients and their consorts are embedded in the extremely richly designed grand ceiling. Elector Max Emanuel had Joseph Effner redesign the hall wing and its magnificent staircase in Baroque style from 1715 to 1717. At the beginning of the 19th century, three quarters of the castle complex was demolished. Only the baroque hall wing was preserved. The courtyard garden testifies to the different eras of garden art. Should it not be possible to visit Dachau Castle and/or the Hofgarten, this does not constitute a reduction in performance.

Old garden walls, a nearly 280-year-old linden tree arcade, an orchard and a small woodland, once equipped with many gimmicks, testify to the different eras of garden art. The garden is particularly attractive due to its location on a ridge on the edge of the tertiary hill country. If for special reasons (e.g. closed event, cleaning, repair work, etc.) it is not possible to visit Dachau Castle and/or the associated outdoor facilities (e.g. Hofgarten), this does not constitute a reduction in performance.
