    Robben Island is one of South Africa’s most iconic landmarks, located about 7 km off the coast of Cape Town. It has a deep and symbolic history: Historical Role: For centuries, the island was used as a place of banishment, isolation, and imprisonment. During the apartheid era, it became internationally known as the prison where Nelson Mandela, along with many other freedom fighters, was held. Nelson Mandela’s Imprisonment: Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison on Robben Island, mostly in a small cell with minimal facilities. The harsh conditions reflected the brutality of the apartheid system, but also became a symbol of resilience and the struggle for freedom.
