Meeting place for the tour. Here you will be introduced to the city and hear an outline of its history. Freiburg confusingly has two Town Halls in this square! You will learn about the 'old' and the 'new' Town Halls.

The main shopping street in Freiburg. From here we can view the Martinstor (one of the five original gates into the medieval city), the Basler Hof (where the bishops of Basel once resided) and Franco-Prussian war victory monument.

Explore the beauty and discover the history of our much loved Cathedral. Visits inside the Cathedral are only possible with groups of five people or less. But there is much to explore on the exterior; marvel at the tower (completed in the 14th century) and appreciate the Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The entrance portal is a really gem, with many 13th century statues and figures.

Every morning, except for Sunday, the popular market can be found in the Cathedral Square. It is full of vibrant colours and inviting smells from the fruit and vegetable stalls, fresh flowers, cheese and meat stands. When the market is not operating, the square has a more serene charm. One much admired building in the square is the impressive old Customs Hall (alte Kaufhaus).

Arguably the most beautiful street in Freiburg. See how houses from the Middle Ages have been lovingly restored to reflect their original character. In this street, you can also appreciate some of the floor mosaics for which Freiburg is well known.

One of the two remaining - and very impressive - city gates of Freiburg. The Schwabentor (Swabian Gate) has been much adorned and altered since it was first built in the 13th century; not to mentioned raised in order to allow modern day trams to pass through. The Schwabentor stands at the edge of one of the oldest areas in Freiburg.

Previously the noisy, smelly tanners district. Now a cute corner of Freiburg with its boutique shops and waterside side cafés. The tanners (and nearby butchers and fishermen) needed access to water hence the canal running through the district. These businesses were located outside of the city walls; a small portion of which can still be found here.

Site of the fabulous Augustiner Museum, previously the Augustinian Monastery and well worth a visit after the tour. Here you will also find more independent stores and coffee shops. Or, if you are thirsty for a German beer, the Feierling brewery is a stones throw away.
