Horse Migration Tour - From the Tusheti to Vashlovani
An Exclusive, Once-a-Year Nomadic Adventure
Dates: 7–14 October 2025
Once a year, the ancient tradition of moving the Tushetian horse herds from the lofty Caucasus mountains to the warm lowlands of Vashlovani comes alive. This is not a staged tour—it’s a real migration, riding side-by-side with 70 free-running horses, crossing wild passes, deep valleys, and golden plains.
You’ll join local horsemen who have inherited this tradition from their ancestors, live under the open sky, and ride trails few outsiders have ever seen. It’s a journey of authentic nomadic spirit, breathtaking scenery, and deep connection with nature.

Meet me here at Rose Revolution square by the Giant Bicycle monument.
We meet early in Tbilisi at the Bicycle Monument, setting off in 4×4 vehicles toward the mountains. Crossing the scenic Gombori Pass (1620 m), we follow the Stori River valley into the legendary Abano Pass (2826 m)—the highest drivable mountain pass in the Caucasus. In Omalo, we’ll visit the Tusheti Visitor Center, Keselo Castle Towers, and the charming villages of Shenako and Diklo. You’ll enjoy stories of the region’s history, visit St. George’s Church, and take in the dramatic views toward Dagestan.
After a hearty breakfast, we saddle up and begin our migration ride toward Kakheti. The trail winds past alpine meadows, ancient stone villages, and the rugged slopes of Tusheti. Lunch is served in nature near Khiso village. We camp at Pitsris Chala, at the foot of the Abano Pass, sharing dinner under the stars.
Today we conquer the mighty Abano Pass on horseback, retracing the route we drove in on day one—this time at the pace of our migrating herd. We stop for a picnic at a scenic viewpoint before descending to the warmer Kakheti lowlands. We camp near the medieval Sviana Fortress.
The landscapes change as we leave the high mountains behind. We ride into the fertile Alazani Valley, framed by vineyards and golden fields. After a picnic lunch, we set up camp in the Shakriani Valley, a tranquil spot perfect for an evening by the campfire.
Our route winds deeper into wine country, through rolling hills and ancient villages. Here, Kakhetian winemaking traditions date back over 8,000 years. You’ll ride between endless vineyards, stopping for lunch in the shade of walnut trees. Camp is set among the vines near Tsinandali.
We continue south, caring for our horses as they adjust to the longer distances after their summer of rest. The Sakobo Valley offers quiet meadows, perfect for grazing. Tonight, our cook prepares another hearty Tushetian meal to refuel us for the journey ahead.
At sunrise, we round up the herd, free-roaming overnight in the valley. Today’s ride is a mix of open plains and charming lowland villages. After a picnic lunch, we camp near St. Elia Mountain, where the horizon seems endless.
The final stretch leads us into the wild beauty of Vashlovani National Park—a land of golden grasslands and dramatic cliffs. Here, the horses will spend the winter months in warmer pastures. We gather for a farewell dinner, sharing stories and laughter before returning to Tbilisi in the evening.
