Participants will receive a 1 day Muni pass to ride cable cars. We will step back in time by riding a cable car to the top of Nob Hill & learn Cable Car History, how Andrew Smith Halladie came up with the idea of the Clay Street Hill Railroad to their rise to popularity in 1890s to what it is today. Later in the tour, we will visit Clay Street where it all began.
We will find out how cable cars operate, & how they are differ from funiculars. We will discover the Signal Tower which was built in 1888 & why it plays an important role in cable cars operation to date.
SF almost lost our cable cars during the cable car wars from the 1944 - 54 with the battle between the male politicians vs the female socialites.
We will walk about one mile (all downhill except last half block). At the end, we will explore the cable car museum. Grab a handle and step aboard the cable car for a few stories from the past on the ups and downs of SF Cable Car History.
We will meet up at the California Cable Car starting point just outside the Hyatt Regency. This tour is rain or shine. If raining, bring appropriate clothing, an umbrella and a smile.
Walkers will be shown through the Cable Car Museum where the walk ends. Since everyone will get a 1 day Muni Pass, walkers can use this pass to further ride the cable cars, streetcars, and or busses all day long.
Aside from learning about how San Francisco is the only city left in the world out of 29 global cities operating our cable cars, we will see an actual functioning cable car museum in action.
