What to expect

We’ll collect you from your chosen meeting point and start the day with a classic Wellington coffee to enjoy on the scenic 40-minute drive to the trailhead. On arrival, we will provide you with plenty of water, snacks, a picnic lunch and sunscreen.

Your hike follows the Escarpment Track – part of the legendary Te Araroa Trail. The 10km walk climbs to 220m above sea level and takes around 3 hours, depending on fitness and pace. This hike is not for the faint-hearted, with 1,200 steps along the route.

Soak up stunning views of the Kāpiti Coast and Kāpiti Island, with time for a classic kiwi morning tea, lunch and plenty of amazing photos.

Your walk finishes in a charming coastal village, where refreshments await (own cost), and maybe even a dip in the ocean, before we return you to the city – a chance to retrace your steps on the ridgeline above, with a true sense of achievement after conquering the iconic Stairway to Heaven.

For those with energy and time to spare, the adventure doesn’t have to end at the northbound finish. You’re welcome to walk back in the opposite direction, and we will collect you whenever you’re ready to return.
