Welcome to Buford Highway AKA the DeKalb International Corridor AKA Chambodia! The neighborhoods and cities along BuHi have transformed over the past half-century into an incredibly diverse area, which is reflected in the sheer variety and volume of global restaurants, bakeries, and farmers' markets.
On this trip, we'll start with a bite at Cuzco for phenomenal Peruvian flavors. We'll continue with several more Asian and Latin restaurants before finishing with a sweet treat at a contemporary Korean-French bakery, White Windmill. All dishes have been carefully curated to be emblematic of their countries of origin, while still being completely at home here in Georgia. Restaurants we'll visit include mom-and-pop shops as well as Michelin Guide selections, some set in strip malls and some free-standing.
Come hungry, but pace yourself. It's a lot of food!! Feel free to take leftovers home with you. I'll have a cooler available just for that purpose.
Meet in front of Steak Market bar and grill on Juniper Street in Midtown.
We'll begin with the vibrant flavors of Peru at Cuzco, where we'll try modern and pre-Hispanic dishes and drinks, including ceviche marinated in leche de tigre, a traditional hangover cure.
Next we'll sample some of Atlanta's best chicken wings and Vietnamese street food at this Michelin-awarded spot.
Up next is a two-for-one. We'll visit Plaza Fiesta, a Latin American mall, where we'll try Venezuelan arepas and Michoacán-style carnitas. If we have extra time, we can stroll a bit and look at the quinceañera dresses and western wear.
Another Michelin-awarded restaurant, Food Terminal offers a delightful range of Malaysian fare with Chinese and Indian tastes blended in.
Of course, the tour wouldn't be complete without dessert. You must have a sweet memory of your time in Atlanta and on Buford Highway. We'll stop in at White Windmill, a contemporary Korean-French bakery. I recommend the bingsu (shaved ice with fresh fruit) for a light refresher, but the macaroons, bubble tea, and Bungeo-ppang (fish-shaped cookies filled with sweet red bean paste) are also quite popular.
