Akihabara Tofu Making Class and Shopping Tour

4 hours (approximately)
Offered in: English

This class will be held at Yakimochi, a Japanese restaurant in Akihabara.
In this class, a chef from the restaurant will teach you how to make traditional tofu. You will also learn how to use okara (tofu pulp) in dishes.
The class includes recipes and teaches you all the steps, so you can make tofu yourself at home.
Please be amazed by the deliciousness of freshly made tofu and the dashi(broth) soaked into the okara.

After the two-hour class, take a 10-minute walk to a local shopping district where you can buy ingredients.
We'll visit Suehiro-dori Shopping Street and Satake-dori Shopping Street, the oldest shopping street in Tokyo.
Here, you will find a variety of traditional Japanese ingredients. The shops you can visit include a roasted bean shop, a sake shop, a dried goods shop, and a tea leaf shop (the shops you can visit may vary depending on each store's days off).
This experience of authentic Tokyo food culture, which is gradually disappearing, will be a special time.

What to expect

This cooking class starts at 1:00 p.m. It is a small class with a maximum of eight participants.
You will learn how to make tofu from soybeans and water, and how to cook with okara, the byproduct of tofu production. Food cutters, heat sources or direct heat, and knives will be used during the class. Children aged 6 and above are welcome to participate, but those aged 13 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Making tofu is not easy. Learn everything, including the monotonous tasks in between. This class is recommended for those who are serious about cooking and those interested in Japanese ingredients.
After the class, we will take you shopping for traditional Japanese ingredients in the nearby shopping district, where the old community remains. We will visit the Suehiro-dori Shopping Street and the Satake Shopping Street, both of which have over 100 years of history. We will guide you in English through areas that are difficult for non-locals to shop in.
The class is scheduled to end around 4:30–5:00 PM.
