Hiking Time: 6–7 hours Distance: 10 km Habitat: Rainforest Details: After registration at Machame Gate, begin the trek through lush rainforest. The trail can be muddy and slippery, so trekking poles are useful. You’ll spot giant ferns, ancient trees, and maybe monkeys. Reach Machame Camp for dinner and overnight.
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours Distance: 5 km Habitat: Moorland Details: A steep climb awaits as you ascend above the forest zone. Enjoy stunning views of Kibo Peak and Shira Plateau. Arrive at Shira Camp, where the vegetation shifts to shrubs and moorland.
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours Distance: 10 km Habitat: Semi-desert Details: This is an acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m), a volcanic rock formation, then descend to Barranco Camp. The climb-high, sleep-low principle helps your body adjust to altitude.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours Distance: 5 km Habitat: Alpine desert Details: The day starts with the famous Barranco Wall climb. Though it looks intimidating, it’s a fun and non-technical scramble. The trail continues through ridges and valleys until reaching Karanga Camp, offering breathtaking views.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours Distance: 4 km Habitat: Alpine desert Details: A short but steep hike leads to Barafu Camp. This is the base camp for the summit. You’ll have an early dinner and rest before the midnight summit attempt.
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours (Summit Day) Distance: 17 km Habitat: Arctic zone (summit), then rainforest (descent) Details: Wake around midnight for the summit push. The trail is steep and challenging, passing Stella Point (5,739m) before finally reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa! After celebrations and photos, descend to Mweka Camp for overnight.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours Distance: 10 km Habitat: Rainforest Details: A steady descent through rainforest leads to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. From here, transfer back to Moshi/Arusha.
