Ancient Theater in Ohrid is located at the foot of the eastern slope of the higher Ohrid hill, under Samuel’s Fortress. The constructors built this ancient theater between two hills which protected it from winds, and thus the ancient theater has incredible acoustics. Because of its acoustics, it is chosen as one of the main stages where the Ohrid Summer Festival takes place.
The fresco painting in this church represents some of the first works of the most prestigious medieval painters Michael and Eutychios. Their dramatic expressiveness was the basis of the new trend in Byzantine art from this epoch, called “The Renaissance of the Paleologues”, which was the last chapter of the Byzantine art.
The fortress dates back from the medieval time, and still stands today, watching over the town and lake Ohrid.
On the archeological site Plaoshink the complex of St. Panteleimon Church and St. Clement of Ohrid is located (where St.Clement, the founder of the Cyrillic alphabet, was buried). This is the very place from where Christianity was spread in these lands.
Standing alone on a cliff overlooking the Lake of Ohrid, above the fishing settlement of Kaneo, it is one of the landmarks of the old town of Ohrid and a favorite symbol in the entire city. The architecture is a combination of Byzantine and Armenian elements.
The church is dedicated to Holy Wisdom, built in the 9th century, on the foundations of an early Christian basilica from the 5th century. The church served as a cathedral church during Tzar Samoil’s ruling, and it was the central church of the Tzar Samoil patriarchy at that time. The church as it is today was renovated and adorned with frescoes in the time of the archbishop Leo, between 1037 and 1056.
This is a Neolithic settlement, reconstructed in a perfect way, so we can imagine how the prehistoric people lived on water, preserving themselves from the dangers of the mainland.
