We stayed here for two nights in Late August. We very much liked this hotel. Rooms were clean and quiet. The owner was a very nice man who went out of his way to ensure we were comfortable. Staff were helpful. The hotel is located on a main square in the old part of town, which was great. The hotel has a back garden overlooking the old city walls. This back garden is a perfect place for a glass of wine on a summer afternoon. Breakfast is excellent. We would stay here again.
We booked a room overlooking the Place Duguesclin for a 3 night break. The room does not have air conditioning but a large fan was provided which together with the nature of the stone walls made the room perfectly comfortable in 29`C heat. There was a separate toilet and bathroom within the bedroom which was clean and contained everything you would expect in a small 'boutique' French hotel. The large double bed was very comfortable for a great night's sleep.
The staff were helpful, friendly and fluent in english. The exterior garden overlooking the ramparts was a bit of a bonus for a quiet afternoon drink away from the hustle of the main tourist streets across the square.
There is a tiny 4 person ( 2 with luggage) lift to take you from floor to floor which is helpful to avoid the stone stairwell.
The central location of this hotel is great the only real issue is parking if you come with a car. You have to time your arrival to avoid the busiest part of the day - or simply be very patient driving in circles around the car park waiting for someone to leave.
Once you are in Dinan there are a myriad of places to eat and souvenir shops to visit. I highly recommend a walk to Lehon and then along the river Rance back to Dinan up Rue Jezual, visiting all the little artist galleries along the way. The Port du Dinan is also a lovely spot for a glass of wine and to watch the boats go by.
I would have no hesitation in staying here again.
Great small hotel, tea/coffee in the room would be a welcome addition.
We did not get to stay in this hotel. I am guessing from the photos and reviews that the Hotel Le d'Avaugour is a nice hotel. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our reservation here because of a major change to our itinerary. This hotel required an up-front payment of both nights of the stay, and they have a no-refund policy. This review is a warning that they mean it. When we cancelled - a full four months before our expected stay - they refused to refund any of our full deposit, even though they had plenty of time to re-book the room. To be fair, I will add that they do state the "no-refund" policy, but I would advise you to be very cautious about booking this hotel unless you are 100% sure that you will be staying there, especially as so many hotels have a great cancellation policy when booking via Hotels.com or Expedia. (We had also paid for Hotels.com trip protection insurance, but it did NOT protect cancellations.)
We spent five days in Dinan, and this small hotel was perfect for our needs.
The city center is right up the street, the Information office just down the street, and there is an absolutely delightful and extensive backyard garden that overlooks the Castle of Dinan. We spent late afternoons there with coffee or a cool drink from the bar, working on our watercolor sketches. Be sure to choose a room in the back with large windows facing the garden. (The website photos do not do it justice.) The owner and all of the staff were very accommodating!
We had a booking for Hotel Le d'Avaugour for late in the summer, more than 90 days out and we had to cancel. We paid over $800 (2 nights) in a deposit and bought the insurance with Hotels.com. They refused to give us any refund, even thought they likely will fill the room and it is more than 90 days out from booking. BEWARE: THEY WILL NOT REFUND ANY DEPOSITS.
Spent a wonderful couple days at this Hotel! This was a return visit after 47 years, we last stayed here on honeymoon in 1972, and we were not disappointed!
A delightful, french hotel, with great ambience, beautiful gardens and excellent accommodation, perfectly situated! Decor although in the traditional style was light & airy!
A charming, helpful Proprieter, even before we arrived and this continued .
The complimentary breakfast was excellent! The beautiful porcelain crockery, with Logo, traditional french coffee cups & the best coffee in Dinan!
Nicolas was on hand to check all your requirements!
He recommended a couple of restaurants and he made a booking for us at Le Fleur du Sel - just across the Square which was excellent! We dined on oysters, guinea fowl, and a perfect dessert. Accompanied by a great wine!
Dinan is a typical old french town, beautifully preserved and we sampled ‘Le Petit Train’ which gave a different perspective & greater insight into its history.
We will be back and we won’t wait another 47 years!
This is a beautiful hotel right in the centre of everything. It has a beautiful quiet garden to the rear which is just a gem. Parked our car in carpark nearby and left it there for 5 days. No carpark in hotel. No need for car as so much to see and walk everywhere or if you like hire a bicycle an cycle along the riverside. Oh the joy of it all. Beautiful little streets full of quaint shops, artists etc. loved it. The hotel Manager was brilliant but I think he needs more help especially at breakfast time. Lovely breakfast. will be back
Not too large. Not to small. Just the right size for a pleasant stay in a beautiful, quaint, and historic medieval town. The hotelier, Nicholas, was attentive, kind, and generous with his knowledge of the area. There's a wonderful garden in the back (not too manicured but not too 'wild') that makes for a nice retreat with a morning cup of coffee. The sitting room is great for reading a book. The hotels location is perfect for exploring on foot and parking, if renting a car, is right across the street. We had a wonderful stay.
A good hotel in a great location in the center of the old city. Rooms a bit small but more than adequate for 1 night stay. Walking distance to old town sites, restaurants and shopping. Convenient parking lot directly across from the hotel. A Rick Steve’s pick!
Very attentive host, the property has a beautiful gardens and excellent location.
A room overlooking the garden would be great. Our room faced the street and was horrible. The sun shines on that side of the hotel and with no air conditioning our room never got below 90. We slept with windows open but eventually had to close due to noise on busy street. Check in person gave us the key and quickly left, closing down the front desk but provided no info on parking and wifi.
Just amazing. Super friendly staff. Greatess location. Great deal.
Would go back.
The location is excellent, the upgraded room was comfortable and the grounds are beautiful. However the place has no soul. After doing the touristy outings it would be lovely to come back to the hotel and sit in the lounge area or garden. But they are locked so early so you can’t always use them. Also no coffee/tea making facilities in lounge or bedroom. The breakfast has a small range of products with an emphasis on breads/croissants & jams. Once again the fruit looked like it had been swimming in the same juice for a few days so not very inviting. Many better options in Dinan!
Located across the street from market square, the hotel is perfectly situated near restaurants, the Thursday farmers’ market, shops (great shoes nearby), The Rance River and grocery stores. As most hotels in small French towns, there is no air conditioning, but my room came equipped with a large oscillating fan, which keep me cool on the unusually hot nights I spent there. There is also a lift, so no need to carry your bags up the stairs. The bathroom came equipped with a large tub and shower combination. There was also a handy clothesline that you could stretch across the tub to hang your wet clothes to dry.
The breakfast, included with my bike tour, was delicious and included wonderful croissants, baguette, homemade jams, a great cheese selection, fresh fruit, and juices, coffee and more.
We are traveling with a bike group and we’re delighted to get booked in his beautiful hotel. Our room is large and comfortable, overlooking the beautiful garden. The amenities are generous and spotless. The front desk is really helpful with restaurant suggestions and reservations. We’re only staying two nights and I’m already wishing it could be longer.
This is a charming property with excellent location in a beautiful City with a GREAT host: Nicolas! Rooms are nice and clean, the property has beautiful gardens and is within walking distance to the city center, river (amazing views/ artists street - awesome) and attractions. Nicolas and his staff are friendly and helpful. We will go back to Dinan and stay here!
I stayed with Hotel Le d'Avaugour in Dinan in October 2015 and loved it. So when we returned to Brittany it was our obvious choice. Nicholas is a great manager and attentive to our every need. I hope to return again.
While visiting Mont St Michel, our tour guide mentioned Dinan and what an incredible place to visit. We added Dinan to our itinerary. Fell in love with it and decided to spend the night. Found the Hotel d’Avaugour. What a great place. Warm and inviting. Pretty garden out back. Quiet.
