Pros:

We had a very pleasant stay, and have already recommended Suiden Terrasse and Tsuruoka to our friends. The hotel was the perfect end to out trip before returning to Tokyo and then home. It has a really quiet relaxing atmosphere, offers local snacks and drinks in the shop, has a chill library space and sake lounge, and the onsen is really well kept. We made use of the onsen both evenings for several hours, particularly enjoying the outdoor onsen and sauna (most my body is covered in tattoos and it is tattoo friendly). Taxis are rather affordable in Tsuruoka as well and the hotel helped us call for them when needed so getting around wasn't an issue. While the hotel offers dinner I'd also suggest going in to the city and trying some of the local restaurants, they are great for fresh seafood and often use many local/seasonal ingredients. Hiking Dewa sanzan is also a must and I'd say worth visiting more than Togakushi. Definitely worth the visit and would love to return.

Cons:

The breakfast at the hotel was nice, offering many local ingredients, though a little pricey for what is offered. I wish there was a little more variety in the local seafood provided at this price, though the local vegetables, pickled dishes, etc. were all wonderful.

Super hôtel, belle architecture et confort. On s’y sent bien. Je recommande.
Pros:

Super établissement, belle architecture, super chambre, les bains intérieurs et extérieurs sont vraiment biens ! Et très agréable d’avoir une bibliothèque à disposition et un bar/lounge pour goûter du saké.

Cons:

Un peu loin de la gare à pied.

Visionary, weird and wonderful: modern Japanese audaciousness in the middle of the rice fields
Pros:

This place was a real turn up for the books. I booked it, thinking it would do for the night but I had no idea how kind of...visionary it would be. I mean the place is audacious - branching out in all directions, taking a really luxurious approach to space - and with this vision to merge with the paddy fields. It was warm and modern and yet simple, almost sparse - but not. Just very thoughtfully done - and with all these great elements like the library put together by the book director, and the Yamagata food specialities in the shop. And the massage options. And let's not forget about the onsen. This was a real treat - to be able to bathe outside, under the light of a full moon, amongst the rice field. Just gorgeous - weird and wonderful.

Cons:

I was fine with this but if you're not trying to get your steps in you may struggle with the amount of walking required to get from your room to the onsen. Although I did go a lot and was in a room quite far from it. Keeps you fit!
