Our stay at the Shijo Takakura Hotel grandreverie was great! It was the most memorable room of our trip to Japan, a great design and lots of space. The stone shower and bathtub were especially luxury. The staff was incredibly attentive. It's the one place we'd immediately go again!

Perfect hotel to relax in after a long day
Pros:

The hotel was amazing with a tub that I used to relax in after walking several miles. The only thing I could complain about is that there was not a stool in the bathroom to sit while I showered but other than that the hotel was perfect in every way.

Frosted window = claustrophobia
Pros:

The Kyoto Shijo Takakura Grand Reverie is a completely decent hotel, but I just couldn’t deal with the opaque windows in our room.

Pictures of the hotel show that the windows are clear and unobstructed. But our two windows were frosted over, completely opaque. I yearned to see out, to feel a part of the outside. I wanted to see the skies and check the weather. Our room felt like windowless room in the bowels of a cruise ship. There was no airflow and the room was dark. The window would only open 5” and the other window was sealed shut. We couldn’t get the thermostat to work. The room felt stifling and the air didn’t feel fresh.

In a way, our room with no view forced us to get out and get out early. I wanted to go out into the fresh air and explore. If you’re claustrophobic or require fresh air, and appreciate a clear window, then this might not be the hotel for you.

Pros:

This was the most beautiful hotel we stayed at in japan. The attention to detail is incredible. The staff was extremely helpful when needed. The room was huge and layout was awesome. Hotel has a awesome bar right in lobby that makes delicious cocktails. Its right by alot of awesome stuff too. Everything is walking distance. Nishiki market and shopping areas in only a short block away. Amazing area to stay in Kyoto. Our favorite stop so far.

Perfect!
Pros:

This hotel was by far the best of our trip. Room was beautiful and comfortable. Everything was top notch: great bed, outstanding shower, good lighting, nice location on a street with lots of small restaurants. Excellent service too. Only about 20 rooms, so book early.

Do NOT recommend this hotel!
Pros:

We chose this hotel for its excellent location and its boutique feel. Room was very small and hardly fit 2 small sized guests. Good amenities and clean. Hotel required us to deposit room key every time we left hotel and picked up from the one person manned reception when back to hotel. When reception person was absent, the lobby bar tender helped. On our last day, we were in a hurry to go back up to hotel room after breakfast outside to do final packing. It was about 10:30am. There was nobody in the lobby and we had no key to our room. We waited for 15 min, calling and knocking on every door with no success. Then the receptionist appeared from the elevator. He was upstairs collecting dirty dishes from in room dining. He did apologize but we were quite furious with his bad service already as we were in a hurry. Coming down, the checkout was quick, but the reception failed to call a taxi for us for 10 min. We ended up hailing a taxi from outside the hotel ourselves. Overall, service level was incompetent and poor. Also, the street was filled with rowdy diners the Friday evening we arrived, way into around midnight. We do NOT recommend this hotel!!

Favorite hotel
Pros:

We stayed in 4 hotels while in Japan, and this was my favorite. It wasn’t the most expensive, and it didn’t have the largest room, but they completely won me over with their warm, excellent service, and with just getting the important stuff right.

Very comfortable bed. Provided packets for pour-over coffee in the room. Fantastic breakfast, brought to our room at our chosen time. I think this last one went the furthest for me.

I also liked the Matcha drink on our arrival. It’s a little weird how they do the key to the room, but ultimately they won me over. They’re also located in a great part of Kyoto and we really enjoyed our 5 nights here.

Excellent stay with great service and perfect location
Pros:

My wife and I just came back from Japan and had a wonderful stay at the Kyoto Shijo Takakura Hotel Grandereverie. The staff provided great service and anticipated our every need. Our room was very spacious (especially for Japan standards) and had plenty of amenities, as well as an ultra comfortable bed. Location was amazing, surrounded by nice restaurants and +/- 5 minutes walking distance from a metro station and Nishiki market. A nice treat was a newly built lobby bar that is now shown on the website pictures.

Lovely in Kyoto
Pros:

Loved this little hotel. On a small quiet street just feet from the main drag. Rooms are large for Japan norms. Staff is soooo sweet and helpful. Breakfast is delivered to the room every morning. Delish and fresh. Beyond clean and comfy. The most sumptuous bed.

Restaurants abound and laundromat literally across the small street.

Just lovely.

Perfect small hotel with a big heart. Amazing location.
Pros:

Japan Reviews

My adult son and I spent 8 nights and 7 full days at this wonderful hotel in Kyoto. The rooms are a great size and well appointed especially compared to Tokyo room sizes. It’s a small hotel with a huge heart because the staff are simply awesome at customer care and support, without exception.
Spacious bedrooms rooms with excellent controllable air-conditioning. The separate toilet and walk-in bathrooms are extremely comfortable and spacious

The location is outstanding for shopping, sightseeing and travel across the city and further travel. 10 mins from Kyoto station on the Karasuma line and as a fan of Uber, its central to anything you need to get to within 5-20 mins.
Walking distance to Teramachi street and Nishiki food markets. The Samurai Experience and the Shijo-Dori downtown shopping district.

Meals are delivered to the rooms as there is no dining facility, but this is not a downside if you are a budding travel/adventurer. Meals can also be brought in from any Family Mart or 7-Eleven, which becomes the norm in Japan.
Additionally, there are 15+ restaurants within a two minute walk, many of which are on the same quiet street. I absolutely loved this small characterful street this hotel was located on.

I wanted to make a special note of the support this hotel team provided before we arrived. As a motorsport fan my son was keen to explore Suzuka race circuit. The hotel contacted the circuit directly and found out there was an all day practice session for different classes of cars on Saturday. The hotel also helped us find a car hire place, Toyota right next to Kyoto station. Picking the car up the night before I drove to Suzuka circuit, which all resulted in an another amazing day. Post event the hotel team then contacted the circuit and was able to get a list of all the driver and their cars after the event.
This hotel goes above and beyond and all you need to do is ask them!!
One of the best Hotel customer experiences I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy.

Pros:
