Beautiful hotel that I’d definitely stay at again!
Pros:

Great breakfast! So many options and additional poached eggs, omelettes etc made to order that are included…plus barista coffee!
The fitness centre and sauna is high end and a really beautiful space.
We were celebrating our birthdays and the hotel went above and beyond to make it extra special for us.

Cons:

Check in wasn’t organised well and the self-service didn’t work which meant there was a long line and a wait.

Appalling Downfall of a Former Favorite – Dishonesty and Arrogance at the Highest Level
Pros:

I have been staying at Sofitel Wentworth on and off for over 25 years, but my recent stay was beyond appalling. The level of service and sheer dishonesty from senior management has completely ruined what used to be a reliable hotel.

The trouble started right at check-in when management refused to honor the confirmed online booking prices, attempting to force extra fees onto the bill. This was not an isolated mistake—I witnessed numerous other guests experiencing the exact same treatment at the front desk.

The core issue appears to stem from overseas-trained management staff whose sole focus seems to be climbing the corporate ladder at the expense of guest loyalty and standard integrity. Hiding behind the "Sofitel" brand name and tossing around a casual "bonjour" does not excuse deceptive business practices or appalling customer service.

Special mention must go to Cassia Schwager, Emma Tran, and Deepa Punjab, whose complete lack of professionalism, attitude, and dishonesty were nothing short of despicable. After 25 years, I will not be returning, and I strongly advise potential guests to watch their bills carefully.

Tired
Pros:

Unbearably noisy rooms. We were on the 10th floor and it sounded like we were on the 1st with the street noise. You could hear people talking in the bar below as well as the music. The building is old and we could hear water running down all the pipes all night long. It honestly sounded like a low grade waterfall.

The breakfast at delta rue is fantastic. The staff are attentive and lovely. The rooms are very nice but I wouldn’t say five star. Great to have a Nespresso machine in the room.

It’s just not the place to stay if you have children or are looking for a decent sleep in general.

Extraordinary Service
Pros:

We traveled 🧳 on a luxury escape package. Our experience was amazing. The staff were in our view so focused on quality customer service we were treated as though we were the only guests in the hotel. The Club was delightful Coco the Manager could not have been more pleasant and helpful. We are now planning our next visit.

The beauty is in the history of this building
Pros:

We’ve just come home from a 3-day Luxury Escapes package. Pros: the value was excellent, breakfast outstanding and the mid-century beauty of this building celebrating its 60th birthday is something else. The hotel itself has a great vibe and the location for city-based exploring, unbeatable. Oh and the gym, saunas and plunge, amazing. So lots of pros. Cons: the room was supposed to be an upgrade but I don’t think so as it was on the petite side. The biggest con however was the self-service check in. We did not interact with one staff member throughout our stay which dehumanised the old school feel of the place. Not a big issue however, still an amazing place to stay.

Very disappointing stay – there are better options in Sydney
Pros:

I rarely write hotel reviews, especially negative ones, but I felt this experience was worth sharing so future guests can make an informed decision.

Location
The location is decent. It’s close to Circular Quay and the harbour, but it’s a bit of a walk from Central Station. Sydney has plenty of excellent hotels in similar locations, so this isn’t a standout advantage.

Hotel
The renovation blends the building’s classic character with modern design quite well. However, the bathrooms clearly haven’t been renovated and feel dated. Overall, it didn’t feel like a true five-star hotel.

Also worth noting, there is no swimming pool. The lobby is constantly busy and noisy, almost like a marketplace, rather than having the calm and elegant atmosphere you would normally expect from a luxury hotel.

Food & Beverage
I didn’t have the chance to try the restaurant. I went to the bar at around 9:45 pm hoping to have a drink, but it had already closed, which felt surprisingly early for a hotel of this standard.

The Room – The Biggest Problem
I stayed in Room 948, and unfortunately this completely ruined the experience.

The room had a constant wind noise coming from around the window. It was loud enough that I repeatedly checked whether the window had been left open. Even allowing for the fact that it’s in the city, the sound insulation was very poor, with a significant amount of outside noise entering the room. If you’re a light sleeper, I would seriously reconsider staying here.

The most frustrating issue, however, was a high-pitched noise coming from the bathroom. It occurred randomly throughout the day and night. Sometimes it lasted only one or two minutes, while other times it continued for around ten minutes.

On the first day I was too tired to report it, although it happened twice, including once during the night which woke me up. The following morning it happened again, so I called engineering. The engineer told me it was probably coming from pipework in another room and that there was nothing they could do.

He said he would ask the Duty Manager to contact me, but I never received a call.

Later that afternoon I waited around 15 minutes at reception to speak with the manager. The response was disappointing. There was very little empathy or concern shown. I was simply offered another room. As I was checking out the next day, I didn’t want to unpack and repack everything again, so I declined. The only alternative offered was a pair of earplugs.

At a five-star hotel, guests should not be expected to sleep wearing earplugs because of unresolved maintenance issues.

What disappointed me most wasn’t just the noise itself—it was the way the issue was handled. Problems can happen in any hotel, but genuine customer care makes all the difference. Unfortunately, I didn’t experience that here.

I’ve stayed at many Sofitel properties around the world, and this was by far the most disappointing. In fact, this is the first negative hotel review I’ve ever written. That alone should say how frustrating this stay was.

I won’t be returning, and with so many other excellent hotels available in Sydney, I would encourage future travellers to consider those before booking here.
