The area
There were so many people standing around outside of our room weed blunts and cigarettes on the stairs from people smoking by the door the pool was empty food and beer caps were still under the couch from the previous quest the bathroom is super small it looks like the ghetto
The staff was the only good part.
The room was filthy, food and dead bugs everywhere. The room smelled horribly of cigarette smoke. Advertised as having a pool and there was no water in it.
The staff was great, the room was clean. The layout of the hotel is kind of like town houses which I liked.
Worst hotel in the Cleveland area. There was nothing to like. The staff was kind.
The unit was disgusting, the paint was peeling off the walls in chunks, the carpet smelled and had visible dirty and stains, the bathtub was moldy, there were maybe 2 plates and a single cup, no bedding for the dirty sofa sleeper, no hangers, no towels in the room. The room wasn't ready at 7pm when we arrived because they had no cleaners. The man at check in was apologetic. We stayed one night and upon check out the manager said he wouldn't stay there. It was so icky.
We didn't end up staying at the hotel because the room was filthy when we arrived, we were told there were no other rooms available and weren't even offered to have it cleaned. On top of that, 2 separate employees had us double booked and another guest showed up to the room while were still in it! We asked for a refund and left, which we are still waiting for!!
Bed and surroundings
Floors
There wasn't much to like. I was disappointed by this hotel twice.
For starters the room had a very bad odor. The floors were dirty. The towels had hair on them. The kitchen barely had dishes. We ended up leaving at 10pm because we couldnt stand to stay.
As a person with asthma this was a difficult stay but at least it was for one night. The place was not clean at all. There was dust everywhere, especially on the microwave. The dust was caked on. The bathroom is where I was the most disappointed.. there was hair.. I will say from other guests because clearly the bathroom was not cleaned properly. Sadly this isn't a well maintained establishment by any means.
Do better at cleaning.
The staff was very friendly! We loved being in what felt like an apartment complex rather than a hotel building. We loved the layout of our suite with the full kitchen and vanity area separate from the toilet and shower. The shower also had really good water pressure.
The entire location was just outdated and not maintained at all. Drawers and doors were falling apart, paint chipped and peeling, burnt out lightbulbs, empty toiletry bottles, and water stains on the ceiling; just very poorly maintained.
It was not clean. It SMELLED very clean upon walking in, which was a good sign as it is a dog friendly establishment, but we found dirty socks in the pullout couch, receipts and paperwork from previous occupants in the garbage cans as well as in the beds, and the pullout bed was COVERED in crumbs and dog hair. It was surface level clean; but the closer you looked, it was quite dirty.
The staff was friendly with us, but it's not pleasant to overhear workers cursing and screaming about their personal drama as you're walking the premises. The police were also in the lobby as we were checking in. Just sketchy and tacky.
The lobby isn't open 24hrs. We needed more towels and blankets after midnight, but no one was available. We had to just make due. The lobby was completely locked and vacated. Not a big deal, but not practical. What if we had an emergency?
The pool area looked nice. The lady at the front desk was very nice. She had a constant long line. She remained patient and treated everyone with respect.
Our shower backed up. No sheets. No towels. No pillows. Filthy sheets on the king bed. Pullout was horrible. I Left within 4 hours. Still waiting for management to call me back.
Nothing
Smell and no tv to watch all night
Just the convenient location.
Bathroom smelled like mold, Floors were really dirty, noisy people around, didn't seem secure when we would lock the door, didn't quite have all cooking utensils. Pan would have been nice, we only had a pot, cookie sheet, and strainer.
The location
It was rundown, the bathroom sink did not drain properly and it was generally unkempt. We arrived at 4 pm and had to wait over 1/2 hour for our room to be ready.
Musty stinky dingy and smelling of weed
Was mouldy outside the screen door
I developed rash as soon as I entêred the room
Which had musty odor and had mould growing outside the glass door
The other room was musty and smelling of weed
The privacy of the rooms
Late check in. I waited over 1 hour for the employees to check me in
To the Management of Sonesta Suites Westlake,
I am writing to formally document the appalling conditions I encountered during my recent stay at your Westlake, Ohio location. As a frequent traveler, I have never experienced a facility in such a severe state of disrepair and neglect.
Upon arrival, I was informed that the advertised pool and hot tub were closed indefinitely due to a water leak—information that was notably absent from your website. During my stay, the internet was non-functional for ten days despite daily assurances from staff that it would be repaired. Furthermore, when a fire alarm went off at 7:04 AM, there was no management response for ten minutes. I eventually called 911 myself, only to be told by responding officers that the hotel had failed to notify them and that the alarm system was not directly connected to the station. Later, when our cable TV failed, the front desk rudely claimed no other rooms were available, a statement proven false when I called from a blocked number and was told vacancies existed.
The physical state of the property is a significant liability. I observed the following:
- Building Condition: Rotting and collapsing stairways, peeling paint, and floorboards that flex underfoot. Several windows are broken or boarded up.
- Hygiene: Our room was musty with filthy, stained carpeting and tiny insects (drain flies) around the sinks. Discarded appliances and trash were scattered outside.
- Parking Lot: Approximately 18 abandoned vehicles are on-site, some with license plates expired for years. I also observed discarded auto parts, a makeshift tent, and a fire pit on the grounds.
Of even greater concern is the safety of the environment. I witnessed open drug transactions in the parking lot and individuals urinating on the building exterior. The property currently functions more as a neglected apartment complex or halfway house than a professional hotel.
The online photos of this location are entirely misleading. I have filed formal complaints and shared photographic evidence with the Westlake Police Department, the Building Department, and the Property Maintenance Inspector. I expect these authorities to take the necessary enforcement actions to address these health and safety violations.
Made a booking via hotels.com apparently they had "maintenance issues" and told hotels.com at 10am but never reached out to me regarding a problem with our reservation.
So roll into town after a long day of driving to have no room. Resulting in a last minute scramble.
I don't know where the photos on hotels.com were taken but the property looks nothing like the property provided pictures. Run down apartment complex vibes. I have stayed at other sonestas not consistent with the brand.
