I had a similar experience to other reviewers.I would strongly caution anyone considering staying at this hotel.

During my stay, my room was broken into and my suitcase was also forcibly opened. This was an extremely distressing experience and left me feeling unsafe and vulnerable. What made the situation even worse was the response from hotel staff. Despite reporting the incident, there appeared to be very little interest in investigating what had happened or addressing my concerns in a meaningful way.

I expected the hotel to take a security breach of this nature seriously, but instead I felt dismissed and unsupported. There was no sense of urgency, accountability, or genuine concern for a guest whose belongings had been tampered with.

Security should be a basic expectation when staying at any hotel. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this property and would advise prospective guests to think carefully about the risks. If you do choose to stay here, take extra precautions with your valuables and do not assume that the hotel’s security measures or response procedures will adequately protect you.

This was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I have had, not only because of the break-in itself but because of the lack of care shown afterward.

Loved it, No pool though. Great surrounding environment.

Our first night in Costa Rica, so glad it didn’t taint the whole holiday. We were given a room a long way from the lifts and down two corridors, right at the end of the corridor by the emergency exit.
The staff on the whole were good, not so much the man on reception in the evening and the security team.
First problem - once we checked in and were shown our room, we wanted to put our valuables in the room safe. We realised that we had not been given our passports back. We went back to reception to pick them up, they had been left under the reception desk, which was unmanned, no one had contacted us to say they had them!!!!
Next we went out for dinner, the area is not very nice, as many other guests have said in their reviews. We got back to the hotel, spent sometime in the bar area and I went back to our room, to unpack, but someone had beaten me to it! Our case and been broken into, the lock broken and wire cut. I called my partner who came back to the room, he then went to report it to the guy on reception who couldn’t care less, said it might have happened at the airport! It hadn’t. We had no follow up from security. Felt very unsafe! Suddenly the room they had given us seemed like the perfect spot to target tourists, easy access to an emergency escape, along way from the lifts.
I could say much more. We have had an incident report from the hotel, which says nothing, we have followed this up with the hotel, they have not even responded. We travel a lot, have stayed in many hotels and this is a first for us - be very careful here

Our stay at the Gran Hotel in San José was absolutely excellent. Everything felt exquisite from start to finish — spotless rooms, beautifully maintained spaces, and an overall sense of comfort and quality throughout the hotel.

The concierge service was outstanding and truly elevated our experience, always helpful, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. It made a big difference in how seamless and enjoyable our stay felt.

We also really enjoyed the breakfast buffet each morning — a great variety and consistently high quality, making it a perfect start to the day.

The location couldn’t have been better. Right in the heart of downtown San José, it made everything incredibly convenient, with plenty of restaurants, shopping, and city life just steps away. Despite being so central, the hotel still felt calm, refined, and relaxing, with a very pleasant overall ambiance.

Overall, a perfect stay in a perfect location — we would absolutely return and highly recommend it to anyone visiting San José.

Wonderful staff, hotel experience and room amenities. Quiet, calm, cool, best sleep I’ve had in a long time. Marcela was also very kind and attentive with us which is greatly appreciated. Surely we will come again in the future

We stayed for two nights before travelling to La Fortuna. The location is perfect, close to many tourist attractions and the square where we met our guide for a walking tour. The lounge, restaurant and public spaces are amazing and we enjoyed listening g to a pianist on Saturday night. The staff are friendly and mostly attentive although we waited a few minutes to order a drink at the bar one afternoon when two barmen were chatting ( tica time!). We have stayed in many 5* hotels but were disappointed that there were no bathrobes, slippers, shower caps etc. Our room was okay but there was an intermittent mechanical noise but particularly bad on the second night as the consistent noise woke us at 5 am and was persistently noisy till 7am. Food and drink was delicious and nicely presented. Burger and pasta with two soft drinks over $100.
