Beware if staying for one night. We had three rooms booked (pre-paid in full two months prior) for my family, my mother and my sister-in-law celebrating our son’s second birthday with a trip to London Zoo.
Circa 24 hours prior to check-in one of us (my sister-in-law) received a relatively casual email apologising that her room had been cancelled as the hotel had been overbooked and we were to be moved to Maida Vale. Inevitably, given the timescale and stress her first response was to call the hotel who specified ‘due to an incident, all bookings were cancelled’. Neither myself or mother received any correspondence pertaining to our bookings.
I then called and the staff member (Sachin) confirmed the bookings had been cancelled and when asked why appeared somewhat vague. Having pressed him on this he confirmed this was due to a group staying longer. I appreciate this may have made sense on business grounds but ultimately we entered into a legally obliging contract with the hotel. Simply an apology was offered and it was only upon requesting compensation that free breakfast was offered at Maida Vale.
I requested written confirmation that our booking had been cancelled and Maida Vale were expecting us. Sachin, to his credit, emailed myself and my sister-in-law accordingly. However, despite hours passing my mother failed to receive the same. She then called the hotel and spoke to a female staff member who seemed completely unaware of the situation and confirmed the booking is still with them. This inevitably not only generated further confusion but further stress in the early evening prior to setting off to London the following morning. I then spoke to the staff member and concluded she was unaware and had not been informed and asked to speak to a manager and requested written confirmation was also sent to my mother.
Upon the initial booking, we requested a cot which the hotel advised they would accommodate. However, this information was not conveyed to Maida Vale.
The decision, the timing, and communication was utterly woeful. Having prepaid (with three seperate rooms) months in advance to be notified the afternoon prior to check in that we were being moved was diabolical. We chose the hotel based on it’s proximity to London Zoo so we were definitely inconvenienced by the situation. If you are a domestic tourist, particularly staying for one night, I would fervently suggest you think again.
