We booked a suite for a getaway, and while the room itself was excellent, the overall service experience was extremely disappointing.
Our check-in time was supposed to be 4 PM, but we didn’t receive our room until 7 PM and were left waiting in the lobby without any meaningful assistance from the front desk staff. The lack of communication and support made the delay even more frustrating.
To make up for the inconvenience, the front desk manager provided a $75 coupon. We used $40 of it during our stay, but after checking out, we were still charged that $40 on our final bill, which felt unfair and misleading.
Overall, despite the quality of the room, the poor service and billing issue made this a very disappointing experience.
I recently stayed at the Grand Hyatt Washington, and while there were certainly high points, the experience fell short of the expectations typically associated with Globalist status.
The Good
Accommodations: The room was notably clean, neat, and well-maintained. The housekeeping team clearly takes pride in their work. The location is awesome, close to everything you want to visit in DT DC.
Dining: The food throughout my stay was enjoyable. The breakfast service was a particular highlight—high quality and a great way to start the day.
The Globalist Experience (Where it fell short)
As a frequent traveler with Globalist status, I’ve come to expect a certain level of proactive service that was unfortunately missing here:
Communication: I never received a welcoming email prior to check-in. While it seems like a small detail, this is a standard touchpoint at Hyatt properties worldwide that helps set the tone for a premium stay.
Special Occasions: I reached out via text to inform the hotel that we were celebrating my wife’s birthday. I was promised that something special would be delivered to the room to mark the occasion, but nothing ever arrived. It’s always disappointing when a hotel over-promises and under-delivers on a personal celebration.
Upgrades: Despite the app showing availability for higher category rooms, no upgrade was offered or provided. Recognition of tier benefits felt secondary rather than a priority.
Final Thoughts
The Grand Hyatt Washington is a solid hotel in terms of "hardware" (the rooms and the food). However, the "software"—the service, communication, and elite recognition—was lacking. If you are staying here as a top-tier Hyatt member, don't expect the same level of personalized service you might find at other flagship locations.
Beautiful hotel located near the convention center, shopping, restaurants, and historical landmarks. Well maintained and friendly/professional service.
ok room but we got a view of a construction site. That construction site produced a ton of dust that ended up all over our room and was easily visible on the nightstands. The hotel restaurant is under construction and the room was over $400/night.
Great location and nicely appointed rooms. The service is great and the people are friendly. BUT, for such a nice high-end hotel, the water pressure is absolutely unacceptable. The other people in my group of business travelers all had the same complaint. It was truly the worst shower water pressure that I’ve experienced in any hotel I’ve traveled to in the last several years. Such an easy fix for them to improve the overall customer experience. Travelers want a nice bed, a clean room, and a good shower. They got two out of three.
Jorge and Robert are the bestest people! Wonderful and understanding parking service! They really go out of the way!!
The hotel exceeded our expectations in every way. The location is perfect for touring DC. It has a direct door access to the metro which is incredibly convenient.
The hotel is conveniently located downtown DC. The atmosphere was nice, there's a bit of construction with the restaurant being built, but they kept it clean and contained. Walking in, the hotel is beautiful! Everything was clean and up to par to what you'd expect.
My biggest complaint is on the service. While every single person I encountered was very nice, none were very attentive. Since there is only a satellite restaurant, they closed for many hours during the day. I don't think it's acceptable to be paying over 400 per night and not have access to room service during the operative hours (for example, 1 PM). I ended up ordering uber eats instead to get the same convenience and they would not let drivers upstairs, which makes sense, but also wouldn't bring outside food upstairs. When I went to get the food from downstairs, I asked the front desk staff for silverware, to which they told me that I would have to call for room service. The room service line rang busy for 5+ minutes and when they finally answered, it took them 2 hours to bring up the silverware.... why would I have waited 2 hours to eat my lunch? I feel that is extremely inconsiderate to the guest considering the lack of options for food in the hotel. Overall, this is a beautiful hotel, excellent location, but when it comes to guest services, I would expect better.
The hotel was recently redone. The entrance is grand and beautiful. The rooms are clean and basic. There were NO drawers any where in the room. I found this bizarre and difficult , as I was travelling for business. The gym was functional but ugly and with terrible industrial lighting, It was an afterthought. For such a grand impressive entrance , they should have spared some funds to make the rooms more functional and the gym nicer. I will not stay here again.
Not too bad.
1, air conditioners too noisy
2. I booked a twin bed room, and I found a long hair inside the sheets of the first bed,so I used second bed.
3. The shower faucet pipe is protruding unusually far from the wall; I'm not sure what's going on with it.
4. The soundproofing is poor; I can clearly hear people talking in the hallway.
since it was the public holiday, the cleaning was not on time and had to book cleaning service, which surprised us. The location is perfect and room is fine. It's a huge hotel and I guess it has too many guests to take good care of all people.
cleaning service is not that good and when we tried to call the desk, very difficult to find a person to answer the phone call.
The hotel was well located and spacious. We had a room with two double beds and which had plenty of space for the three of us.
Overall standard of facilities
Not well maintained. Barely could see through window. Room was not made up 1 night. Did not come to service when requested in evening. Following day they cleaned the room… at bare minimum standards. Unexpected in my past experience with Hyatt.
Aster customer service was beyond amazing came down to dinner buffet and got greeted with a smile and top of the top service WITH A SMILE from Aster.
