We loved everything about this hotel! We traveled as a family (2 parents and 3 teenage boys) over the holidays. Hotel is kept up very nicely. Every where we went the staff was hard at work maintaining the property. Rooms were spacious and clean. The views from all over the property were beautiful. Restaurants were delicious and the service couldn’t have been better. We loved the pool and the beach too. We didn’t want to leave. We have stayed at many resorts in the Caribbean and this topped them all. We cannot wait to return
Resort property was expansive and amazing. Due to the size, it never got crowded. While there, I had the opportunity to take advantage of the complimentary Blinnk photography session. I was hesitant to do it because I’m not a natural poser in photos and feel awkward in them. But I liked the idea that the season was complimentary and that you got to view the photos first before deciding to purchase. Initially I was planning on purchasing 1 to 2 images if any; I’d assumed that I’d dislike all the photos but with our photographer Cynthia Buckles’ help with poses and good eye, we ended up purchasing a package! The photos came out much better than expected and we had trouble narrowing down which ones we wanted to purchase. The one thing I would suggest is if the photographers can point out if necklaces or hair is misplaced. We had to say no to some photos because hair was covering the face or a necklace was off centered. Otherwise, I had a lot of fun with the photo shoot and would recommend people to give it a try, it may just surprise you!
location and serenity despite the size very calm and relaxing
We stayed at the Hapuna Westin for the at least the third time. The last time we were there was a while ago when it was still a Prince hotel property. The hotel has been updated with modern furnishing and to the Marriott Westin standard. One of the big changes is the construction of condos and rentals in front of the main hotel. I believe that it takes away from the views of the ocean from some of the floors. Check when you book!
The hotel provides amenities, consistent with high-end resorts, and that includes some gear for swimming snorkeling, and boogie boarding. Plenty of space with umbrella and beach chairs.
The buffet for breakfast is good. It does provide food for Japanese and Chinese tourist. The staff at the main restaurant is super friendly and responsive. I found the atmosphere at the bar so so.
The rooms are average size and comfortable, and the mattress was a little harder than I’m used to for a Westin.
Read my review of the Fairmont to compare.
This is a beautiful resort on a gorgeous beach. Rooms are spacious, pool areas are lovely, very quiet and relaxing. This is a great choice for a Kohala coast stay with one of the best beaches in all of Hawaii.
The pool & beach access!
A gorgeous hotel, beautiful setting and wonderful beach. The staff were amazing. Very friendly and kind. Our room was lovely and very comfortable. The breakfast buffet was incredible and the food/drinks at the Naupaka Beach Bar great. The Meridia restaurant was a top notch dining experience.
Nothing. Everything was wonderful

Been here several times and it's always wonderful. Loved our room, Meridia, all the welcoming staff, and of course, the beach. Looking forward to returning again:)
Everything was great, the only complaint was that the room wasn't cleaned for 2 days in a row - that is, the towels weren't changed.
We had a great stay at this fabulous resort. The room, pools, beach and especially the restaurant Meridia was amazing. We had a waitress at meridia named Elizabeth who was so lovely and wonderful. The food was excellent too. We highly recommend this resort and restaurant.
Firstly, let me say that this is a nice resort and it is located on a great beach.
As Big Island residents we have had the opportunity to stay here twice in the last few months.
The first stay was excellent.
This time however there were a couple of issues.
1. On our second day, we returned late in the afternoon to find that the room had not been cleaned. As we needed to shower and get ready for a dinner we just asked housekeeping to send up some clean dry towels.
2. My wife and I had dinner at the Meridia restaurant. They forgot our starter and just brought out our main course. We sent it back and requested the starter that we ordered. Not quite what I would expect from a restaurant that I paid $250 for dinner for two.
To add insult to injury Marriot haven't posted any points for my stay.
We mentioned the cleaning and restaurant issues with the front desk and I completed a customer satisfaction form. I've heard nothing back.
The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is easily one of the best stays on the Big Island—if not the best overall beach experience you can have here. From the moment you arrive, everything about this property feels effortless, relaxing, and beautifully maintained.
Arrival & Check-In
Access is incredibly easy. The drive in from KOA is smooth and simple, and the resort entrance makes a great first impression. You walk into an open-air check-in area with an absolutely breathtaking view—one of those “stop talking and just stare for a second” moments. Arrive during daylight if you can so you get the full impact of that first view over Hapuna Beach.
Check-in itself was fast, organized, and friendly. Even though the resort is older, it never feels dated—you get the classic luxury bones, but everything is updated, refreshed, and taken care of. It has history without feeling stuck in time.
Resort Layout & Amenities
What makes this place special is how well everything is designed around the beach and the pools. You’ve got:
• Three pools — an adults-only pool, a unique koi pond pool, and a dedicated kids’ pool with a hot tub
• Direct, easy access to the golf course — you literally step outside the resort and you’re there
• A beach that’s unreal — Hapuna Beach may be man-made, but it is genuinely stunning. White sand, clear water, wide shoreline—it’s probably the nicest beach on the Big Island, and that’s saying something.
Dining & Restaurants
There are several food options spread throughout the property, ranging from casual to upscale. You’re never stuck with just one restaurant. Whether you want a full meal overlooking the ocean or a quick bite by the pool, it’s easy to find something good. Prices aren’t cheap (you’re in Hawai‘i), but it’s not Hilton Waikoloa-level expensive—just normal “nice resort” pricing.
Overall Experience
The Westin Hapuna has the perfect balance of luxury, location, and simplicity. Everything is clean, maintained, and feels intentionally designed around the ocean. The age of the property actually works in its favor—it feels classic and well built without being dated.
If you want a true Big Island beach resort with views the moment you step out of the car, great pools, golf next door, and a beach that looks like a postcard, this is absolutely the place. I’d go back without hesitation.
Beautiful views and beach, can snorkel from the shore! Wonderful and friendly staff! Great variety at the breakfast buffet.
