Sanctuary in Gion
Pros:

Everything about this place is right. The staff is warm and welcoming, the design is outstanding and the location is wonderful. Even though we arrived late in the evening, we were greeted with genuine thoughtfulness ...nothing rushed. After settling in, we went wondering the streets of Gion....stunning. Our entry into Japan was just magical. Thank you Sowaka, wish we could have stayed longer! Highly recommend their early morning guided tour.

Terrific place. Beautiful and restful, and really well located. The staff was amazing. There was nothing they didn't provide - it was almost like they were anticipating our every thought and need. The restaurant - Gion Loka - was fantastic. Great breakfasts - both the Western and Japanese set courses are terrific. And dinner there was amazing. My wife is a pescatarian (but no raw fish!) and they were completely ready to accomodate her needs.

Cons:

We are both 70 - which made the Japanese room decor ( which involves everything being low to the floor) slightly challenging. The beds weren't futons...but they were still pretty low. So - that alone was a little tough for us!

We loved the ryokan, the location and the wonderful service and staff. Can’t recommend it enough.

Service was impeccable. Everyone was focused on ensuring an excellent experience and they went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. Their follow up on everything was remarkable. Truly a wonderful, authentic experience.
