We had a great experience at this hotel. It’s full service and so much to do. The hidden speakeasy was so much fun, MDRD on the top floor was a lovely experience, pool was nice, room service was so fast, all staff was friendly and accommodating. I loved walking through the hotel and feeling the history. We had a riverview room and everything in the room was great! I loved that there is so much to do in the hotel alone. I also love that there is a skywalk that connects to the Van Andel. Very convenient. Great location. I would say this is definitely more of an adult hotel. I’ve wanted to stay here for years and after my first stay I am happy to say we will be back again soon for another little getaway!
location
No hot water in the shower, bathroom door broken, ceiling panel missing and electrical exposed
Staff would not go to our room and retrieve an item we left behind at 9:30 am before housekeeping could come in and throw it away. $300.00 went out with the trash
Just returned from a very bad stay at this hotel. For context, we have stayed at this hotel since 2019 during our Grand Rapids visits. We regularly request (and pay for) a river view in room 1484 (or higher......1584, 1684, etc.) with a king bed. They have always graciously accommodated this request. (Yes....we know specific rooms may not be available during check-in but why no past problems in this area?)
We arrived to find 30+ people waiting in the check-in line with only 2 staff working on a consistent basis. We waited 40 minutes. The line behind us kept getting longer and longer. How could you not know the expected guest arrivals on any given day and staff accordingly? Pretty much chaos to start our stay.
During the check-in process we were assigned the following room:
1. The worst river view room money could buy. See below photos of the view we received in the past and the room we had last night.
2. There were two queen beds. No king bed like we have at home,
3. A light was out in the bathroom fixture. (See attached photo).
4. The dresser drawer holding the safe was broken. This made the drawer very difficult to open or close. (See attached photos).
Lastly there was an incident.......a bellboy was instructed to deliver luggage to our room by the front desk. He used his passkey and just came right in. The problem was it was not our luggage, and we were occupying the room! Luckily, I was dressed but my wife was not that dressed and had just moments before gone into the bathroom and closed the door.
To the hotel's credit, they did profusely apologize for the "incident" and gave us a $40.00 gift card. When we checked out, I returned the gift card unused and told them of all the above issues. They immediately removed all charges for last night's stay.
We traveled 150 miles one way to attend a Nate Bargatze comedy show. It was supposed to be a special, one time only opportunity and getaway. It wasn't.
Room was very dated....overpriced...$900 for an old suite...no breakfast room service available....web site to order out not functioning...
Beautiful old hotel with a very modern addition. The lobby is gorgeous and located in the old Paintland portion which has been magnificently restored to its former beauty. Excellent location and first class amenities.

The building was beautiful, comfortable and easy to navigate. The views from our room were amazing. The noise cancellation between rooms was excellent.
