Valet parking was very convenient. The hotel itself is beautiful, and the staff member we spoke to at check-in was really welcoming and made very helpful suggestions about things to do locally. Our suite was beautiful, with interesting architectural features and good quality crisp white bedlinen. Our bathroom was small but clean, with abundant soft towels. We would definitely stay at this hotel again in future.
The position was very central
There was no outside space to sit and the weather was wonderful
I’m pretty disappointed with our stay here. I specifically booked this hotel through the Chase Edit program because of the extra perks, but in the end I didn't receive any.
I know the room upgrade is "subject to availability" and I did not receive one...but I’d even reached out to the concierge before our trip to ask for an upper floor. Instead, they put us on the absolute lowest guest floor possible. Also, the welcome amenity? Never showed up.
The biggest issue was the $100 hotel credit and the breakfast benefit. The front desk flat out refused to honor them because I didn't have the physical Chase credit card on me...only my virtual one (tap to pay) on my phone. Look, I have a lot of cards and I don't carry every single piece of plastic when I travel. I’ve never had an issue like this at other Chase hotels before.
It was very frustrating because I even got the Chase concierge on the phone to talk to the manager and confirm my card and it being active, they still wouldn't budge. It felt like they were just looking for excuses not to give us what we paid for.
The only saving grace was the cleaning service. The staff were so nice and did a superb job keeping the room in great shape, but the management side of things was a total mess. Won't be staying here again.
The Grant is a true classic hotel, over 100 years old and beautifully restored. Lots of wood accents throughout. Check in was flawless by May. Rooms are very comfortable with the best hotel beds anywhere. Lots of outlets and USB ports. Great lighting. Rooms maintain a classic appearance with all needed modern conveniences. Efficient housekeeping and turndown service easily obtained by an electronic button near door with multiple settings (Makeup room and privacy). Concierges are outstanding, particularly Lee Ann and Mark. Contact was made about a week prior to arrival asking to assist. A list of recommended restaurants was sent and an offer for their Destination Discovery,( a guided tour of the historic aspects of the hotel. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Location is great - adjacent to the Gaslamp District, a short walk to Little Italy, waterfront, ferry to Coronado, the symphony and theater. Restaurant - Grant Grill- is true fine dining. Check out was quick and efficient. This is a property we will definitely return to.
We stayed here for one night booked using Amex's Fine Hotel & Resorts (FHR) portal and overall we had a wonderfully comfortable and welcoming stay. A big plus is that this was centrally located to attractions like the zoo, Balboa Park, etc.
Upon checking in, we were upgraded with a larger room and were told about our benefits, including a $100 food & beverage credit, as well as a breakfast credit the next morning. The concierge was also extremely helpful in giving recommendations and updates on what events are happening around the hotel.
A lot of people had mentioned that the beds were really comfortable and I would agree. We slept pretty great and the room definitely had a very cozy vibe. It was also very clean. The next morning we had breakfast in the room and that was delicious and convenient. I'd recommend having breakfast in bed; the rooms are designed like they were meant for it.
If I had to nitpick I'd say the elevators are a little on the slow side, but that is expected with an old historical building. Valet Parking is also a little steep at $70 but it gives some peace of mind knowing it's in very capable hands.
I had a wonderful one night stay and as a platinum member I was provided an early check in with a wonderful larger upgraded room. Aisha at the front desk was exemplary with her professionalism, warmth, and efficiency. She also offered me a late check out which I accepted but had to change to even a later time, which Victoria graciously handled. Both of them were absolutely amazing. I would’ve actually marked this classically beautiful hotel had the water temperature worked normally. The shower either had scalding hot water or freezing temperatures, so I had to artfully dodge in and out of the shower to get cleaned. Washing off my hair was a challenge. I did advise the gals and they said it would be addressed as I was checking out. The hotel itself is regal as it has a storied past. Rooms are tastefully decorated and views were very nice. The Grill offered delicious breakfasts and the two servers, Jose and Jose, were just a true delight. Loved the location of the hotel as it’s right in the middle of gas lamp and the property is well secured with only your key card allowing access. Looking forward to a return and I’m sure the water temperature should be fixed :-)
Easy accessible
Lots of distractions like construction work or luggage carts pushing.
Courtoisie et discrétion
N.a
The hotel is stuck in time. For example, no digital in-room ordering is available. You have to call and talk to someone. Heating did not work in our room and some towels were stained. Public areas looked classy and nice, and the restaurant did good cocktails. Bottom line: The hotel is worth a visit, not a stay.
The US Grant hotel in San Diego, is in a good location in the middle of the city and staff at the hotel so kind and especially ( Miss. Paulina ) reception staff, she was very polite, helpful, kind and friendly with us. I really appreciated her and what she did with us. So , I hope the management of both hotle and Marriott Bonvoy be appreciate her as she represents the hole in perfect and in the ideal way.
I was excited to stay at the US Grant after looking into this historic hotel. The lobby is beautiful and we enjoyed dinner and wine at the Grant Grill over 3 days. Their bartenders and waiters are awesome, especially Marco at the bar, Samuel who waited on our table for dinner, and Paulina for breakfast. Champagne under the Chandeliers was very nice, but that needs to be a daily thing, as the bar area was often full up.
The room was a high floor Legacy Suite, which had a weird layout. There was literally a foot between the one side of the bed and the wall, making it more difficult to get by since there were curtains there. The wifi and cell reception was terrible not only in the room, but throughout the hotel. We had to go outside before we could order an Uber. The worst part about the room was the bathroom. One minute the water was warm, then the pressure dropped, raised again, and it became scalding hot for nearly a minute. This happened with both sink and shower during every use, making it a chore to get ready in the morning or showering in the evening. You also have to pull the handle on the toilet toward you and hold it up until is completely flushes. Room cleaning and turndown was awful. There was no stationery in the room, nor was it replenished during any day and I had to go to the desk to get so I could send out holiday letters from the property. There was a dirty glass and coaster in the cabinet, and when they put out the turndown tray, there was no breakfast menu. Obviously missing from its spot, but never refilled. We even found a dirty white linen on the desk when we came back that they obviously used for something and left there.
We heard from staff that they are going to essentially gut the first floor for a complete remodel at the end of 2026, which seems a complete shame for a historic hotel. The rooms are also set for a refresh, which is much needed and hopefully the plumbing issue will be fixed during that time.

What didn’t I like?
Nothing
One cannot be mad at a hotel that has such a nice bed. It hugs while giving firm support. The historical nature of this hotel makes it interesting, but its best days seem behind it now. The interior is nice but not quite at the 5-star standard. The side doors are locked and require key-card access at night (instead of placing doormen or security guards). Some reviewers complain about the homeless outside, but that really is a problem of the entire downtown area, not this hotel alone. The temperature control unit in my room made a metallic grinding noise from time to time, loud enough to wake me up, so by the third night I learned to keep it off and just went with the ambient temperature of the hotel (which fortunately was reasonable at 71 degrees). The safety deposit box in my room had no power, and by the last night my door lock also ran out of power. All in all, this would make a unique and very nice 4-star hotel (which was what I paid for at corporate rate anyway), and it probably is a mistake for the hotel to advertise itself as a 5-star and raise unrealistic expectations.
I was coming in off of a transatlantic trip and initially given a 3rd floor room on the east side of the building, which was a bit on the noisier end and (given my interest in an early night) I visited the front desk to ask about a change. Despite my (undoubtedly) cranky approach, Jack was extremely patient with me and worked his best to accommodate my request for a quieter room. Extremely grateful for his excellent service and care!
Visited the bar the next evening and was fortunate to have Marco to guide me through the Grant’s fascinating selection of whiskeys. Excellent service all around!
Overwhelmingly luxurious hotel. The location is in the heart of downtown San Diego and within walking distance to the festivities of the gaslamp- bars, restaurants, theaters, shops.
The one-off homeless scattered in the vicinity
We had an incredible stay at The U.S. Grant in downtown San Diego! Every part of our experience was exceptional: check-in, concierge, bar service, and housekeeping all went above and beyond. As Marriott Platinum and Stars members, we were treated like royalty with thoughtful perks and extra-plush robes on the 6th floor.
While there was a bit of street noise, it didn’t take away from how beautiful and comfortable the stay was. The shower and amenities were top-quality. Breakfast at the Grant Grill was complimentary for us; the service was flawless, though the menu was a little on the adventurous side for our tastes.
Late-night room service was prompt and delicious. Overall, an elegant, five-star experience from start to finish. Highly recommend The U.S. Grant if you’re looking for luxury and outstanding service in the heart of San Diego!
