Overcharged for my stay
Pros:

The overall area.

Cons:

My credit card was charged both by Booking. com and the hotel for the same one-night stay in an amount over $500. I had to dispute the discrepancy with my credit card company for a refund since the hotel hasn't yet refunded my card the overcharge amount. We won't stay here again. The hotel should've only charged me the $35 early check-in fee rather than for a night's stay since I had already paid for my stay through Booking. com

The location was good and within walking distance to the downtown area.
Pros:

The location was very good. There was no breakfast included. Coffee was served.

Cons:

The room had no closet or iron or ironing board. The bath room was a dark brown tile that looked old. The room was located on the bottom floor which felt like living in the basement.

Probably will not return.
Pros:

Nicely renovated, although room decor uninteresting . Much improved over old establishment, especially the grounds.

Cons:

Bed was not super comfortable.
There was no breakfast offered, despite questions on this survey. We were put off by the sales attempts…Merchandise in the room with sales tags, the “store” with its overpriced merchandise.

Anniversary trip and we were disappointed. Underwhelmed by the village of Highlands and very over price and pretentious.
Pros:

Location. Quiet and fairly clean. clean. Staff was exceptional. However, the Queen room was very small. There is no place to sit except a short bench attached to the wall by the TV. The beds are exceptionally low to the floor and not great for sitting. No hooks or towel racks in bath so the card requesting you hang up your towel for reuse is almost laughable. The shower grout appears grey but is also mildewed and it scraped off with your nail. Not grey grout at all! We got a balcony room expecting a view of mountains but got a parking lot. Every day around 4 pm the fire pit was lit and it burned strong smelling, very smoky wood. This smoke permeated that side of the property. Sitting outside near it was terrible. Even unpleasant on our viewless balcony. We enjoy fire pits but most have gas logs or other smokeless fires. This fire was not enjoyable and you came away smelling like smoke. Converting to a less polluting fire source would be better. There a “mini fridge” which was actually a mini bar with pricey water and a temperature unsafe for storing any food leftovers or snacks. 45-51 degrees F No breakfast is available even in the adjacent restaurant. There is no food or bar service in this facility. There is a pantry the front desk manages for beverage and snack purchase. You can trek up a steep set of rock stairs for Apres hour or dine at the adjacent restaurant. The restaurant food was good but pricey and service very slow. We had a 7:45 reservation and were not seated promptly. We left after 9:30, waiting over 30 minutes for a fried chicken dinner. Very slow. Staff was friendly and very nice.

Cons:

See above.

Mildew and damp room in a beautiful hotel!
Pros:

This hotel was almost perfect… the ambiance, the location, the staff, the decor.. so picturesque. However, we booked Garden room on ground floor . It was beautiful , but the smell was a strong mildew smell. The rooms humidity level was so high that our clothes were damp the next day . I had laid a paper map on the floor and the next day it was limp .
The most disappointing thing about it is I know, without a doubt they have repeatedly had that complaint of that room in particular.. yet they are still renting it . We are hotel professionals, and without a doubt that room should not be rented until the humidity level is dealt with..

Nice place, but didn’t meet my expectations
Pros:

Cute hotel with very friendly staff. As a Titanium Elite Marriott member, the hotel didn’t meet my expectations: no room upgrade offered, and I wasn’t able to check in an hour early. The hotel doesn’t offer a full service stay: breakfast isn’t served on site (just morning coffee and tea) and no fitness center. For the price, I expected a little more.

Hotel is fine but disappointed in the room
Pros:

The property itself is good overall. Convenient location and had a nice lobby. Staff seemed fairly friendly and helpful enough.

Cons:

Totally disappointed in my room. It had a weird musty smell and was on the first floor which is below the lobby level and felt very claustrophobic and dungeon-like. The room itself is very very basic - no seating area and no closet. The so-called patio was overpowered by the sound of the air conditioner and basically I had a view of my car’s bumper. I booked this because I am a rewards member and usually like Marriott’s but I would not go back to this hotel because of this room. I did notify the front desk and they claimed the only alternative was an ADA room, even though the parking lot was almost empty the second night we were there.

Comfortable but Not Stellar
Pros:

Trailborn is in a lovely setting. We enjoyed good beds, good A/C with a little help from our fan, great bedside table lamps, charging ports, pretty quiet. Staff was very nice and accomodating.

The room needs less emphasis on selling stuff, needs a microwave, bathroom needs an exhaust fan and a closing door - the open concept just isn't great. Little things like bathroom cups and lids for the (instant) coffee cups, and a closet with extra blankets ironing board would be helpful to guests. The staff was very ccommodating. The TV said coffee in the lounge from 6 - 10 a.m. but when I went out at 9:30 a.m. it was completely cleared away.
I would rate 3.5.

Highly recommend!
Pros:

Wonderful location for our Mother-Daughter trip! We loved the Trailborn Highlands. It was cozy, outdoorsy, had great customer service and morning coffee. We could walk into the cute town of Highlands for a meal, shopping or cocktail. A close drive to hiking too. The Highlands Supper Club being a 3 minute walk was especially convenient with great atmosphere and food. Highly recommend!

Lovely mountain stay
Pros:

What a hidden gem! Beautiful space, comfortable bed and relaxing firepit outside with the front desk doubling as a bar at night! Highlands is a great getaway from the Carolina summer heat and we will definitely be back!

Perfect location!
Pros:

The location is perfect! Just a quick walk to downtown with so many delightful restaurants. The scenery is beautiful and lots of walking paths nearby. The room and bed were very comfortable. We are very active and could have used more guidance from the front desk about hiking other than "just use all trails".
We were not happy with the Supperclub restaurant . High prices and no service.
We went to the visiters center and she gave wonderful advice. On the Veranda was a wonderful restaurant that for the same price had great food and service.
Also they used to serve banana bread in the lobby but are making a transition to offering breakfast at the restaurant . Since we didnt think the restaurant did dinner well not happy with that. We missed the banana bread!
Also they were out of lotion and I am a person that loves here ammenities.
Did not appreciate the burning fire all day when it was warm for summer.
