Hands-down the worst experience I’ve ever had at a restaurant or hotel. I never thought I’d have to write a review like this.
At this “5-star” hotel’s restaurant, I ordered a veggie burger. After biting into it, I realized the patty was scorching hot — hot enough to immediately burn the roof of my mouth, gums, and inner cheek in a way I’ve never experienced before. I was in severe pain and alerted the staff, but the only response I got was that “it’s made fresh.” No one offered ice, cold water, or any meaningful assistance.
The next morning, because the injury was so painful and visible, I sent photos to my dentist and was referred to an oral surgeon right away. The oral surgeon documented moderate intraoral burns, including sloughing tissue along the hard palate and upper-right area of my mouth. I was unable to eat normally for days and remained in significant pain for about a week.
This happened in late June. Since then, I have called the hotel multiple times and emailed management, and I still have not received a meaningful response about the incident.
They are aware that I incurred medical bills and needed specialist evaluation, yet NO ONE HAS FOLLOWED UP to make this right.
I expected basic care, accountability, and follow-up from a hotel at this level. I received none of that.
It is a nice hotel. Location is not bad. Close to some high end stores.
We had an issue with the bathroom lights and the front desk sent someone in like 5 minutes.
Awesome response time.
The room could do with some more live from the house cleaning crew.
I found a torn teabag paper in the Tea Case.
Carpet needed some deep cleaning.
No big deal.
All in All Not a bad hotel. Breakfast was decent.
Room was nice. The hotel itself was average. Great location by Union Square. Lobby isn't much to speak of. There were free pastries and coffee in the morning, but that was a telling example of why this place didn't feel five star. The pastry case had fruit flies hovering around it, and was empty by 9 am (not restocked). The coffee was mediocre. That's sort of how the entire hotel felt - just OK, not really special.
Everything was very good!!!
Great location, courteous staff, great restaurant, great bargain on room
Excellent hotel and wonderful staff. The cleaning staff did a brilliant job!
While the Taj Campton Place offers an excellent, central location, it fails to deliver a true 5-star experience, struggling to even meet standard 4-star expectations.
Service was a major letdown from the start. Check-in was unwelcoming—the host forgot to give me my keys, failed to explain my Chase benefits, and provided no welcome amenity. Throughout the property, attention to detail was missing; the elevator was dusty, the downstairs spa water dispenser was consistently empty, and the room’s carpet was slightly dirty. The entire hotel feels heavily dated and desperately needs a renovation, especially given the lack of real hotel amenities.
Dining was equally frustrating. The main restaurant was closed on Sunday, leaving only a bar alternative with subpar service. Breakfast was an exercise in patience, with long waits to be seated and for food to arrive. The buffet option was incredibly limited, offering only cold items like cereal, yogurt, and cold cuts.
The only highlights were the excellent evening turndown service (complete with free macarons and slippers), plenty of complimentary in-room water, and decent morning coffee and pastries downstairs. The gym was also decent—small, but packed with cardio machines, though it could use more strength equipment.
Overall, a great location and nice turndown treats cannot mask the poor service and neglected property. Look elsewhere for actual luxury in San Francisco.
I had high expectations for this hotel based on its five-star reputation and prime location which is close to china town, etc. but the service fell short in some areas. The arrival experience was underwhelming. There was no doorman or bell staff to greet guests or assist with luggage, even though parking is off-site. At check-in, the front desk staff was efficient but not particularly warm or welcoming (with exception with John who assisted us). A friendly greeting or small hospitality gesture, such as offering water, would have gone a long way in making guests feel valued.
Breakfast is great and customer service is excellent, shoutout to Elijio. No pool on site, but the view of the workout room is nice.
Another disappointment was the additional service charges. Even for small in-room requests, the hotel charges approximately $10 for delivery or service, which feels excessive considering the room rates and luxury branding. While the property itself is beautiful and the location is excellent, the level of hospitality did not match what I expect from a five-star hotel. Again, this is exception with John and front desk guy who lent me scissors. The front desk guy who checked us in maybe needs more training for warmer customer service. Overall, we had a nice stay.
The Cleanness and location
The street noise and the view of our room.
Gorgeous hotel, we included both the dinner and the breakfast in this stay. Amazing staff, fantastic food, and very comfortable room. Had small issue with the bathtub and they upgraded us to a suite, and were lovely about the whole thing. Will return for sure.
Nothing, this stay exceeded our expectations.
The staff were exceptional and they offered me an affordable upgrade on checking in. The rooms were exceptional and all the service staff were extremely nice and helpful.
I didn't have any negative experience; it is an excellent facility in a great central location in San Francisco.
Stayed with my family at Taj Campton for 4 days in May 2026
The location of the hotel is perfect, right at union square..
We had a wonderful experience with a lot of personalised service from Gursharan at the front desk, Abhishek in the restaurant, head chef George Thomas and the GM Pulkesin Mohan
The whole Taj team makes sure that one feels at home.. away from home
The food at the Bombay Brasserie restaurant was very nice
Breakfast was excellent too
All our needs were taken care of ..
All this Tajness makes the group stand out amongst the competition
Very disappointed with my experience at Taj Campton Place. For a luxury Taj property, the guest service expectations were not met.
* The kitchen closes around 9:30 PM, so getting dinner after that is practically impossible.
* On Sunday and Monday, their signature Indian restaurant remains closed, which was especially disappointing for guests expecting Indian food from a Taj hotel.
* Even for small in-room requests, the hotel charges around $10 delivery/service fees, which feels excessive.
The location is good, but the overall hospitality and food availability were not what I expected from the Taj brand.
