This a great place to stay that is in the Victorian era mode. I hope the basic decorum and vibe of the place never changes. It is a throw back to another era and all of the pictures from earlier times in Kolkata and the hotel and news clips are very interesting. Yes there maybe some pealing paint (which to me is part of the charm) but there is a touch of class throughout - e.g. white table cloths, real crystal wine glasses, antique furniture. The staff is well trained and eager to please. The breakfast that was included provided a nice array of choices that were well prepared.

The hotel's historic character is charming; the staff were helpful; and the breakfast buffet at the patio cafe was very good. Our room was a bit quirky: it opened directly onto the dining room, and there was no partition between the shower and the rest of the bathroom.

Needs major upgrade. Living off its legend.

A real heritage hotel (building dates from 1783) with great atmosphere.

If you’re looking for something old world and quirky stay at the Elgin. Fantastic location too. Walking distance to new market, park street, Eden gardens etc.

Le lieu est parfait, le bâtiment aussi, il a un côté désuet qui reflète son âge. Il témoigne d'un pan de l'histoire de la ville et c'est en cela que ce lieu est attachant. On s'y sent bien. Il faut juste accepter un certain degré de vétusté qui n'est pas sans charme et le distingue de toutes les chaînes au décor plus ou moins identique.

La localisation m'a parue excellente et je me suis beaucoup déplacée à pied.
Prendre son dîner dans le patio est un régal, d'autant que les plats sont vraiment bons.
L'hôtel est calme bien que situé dans un question bouillonnant.
J'ai quelques réserves sur la propreté. Le ménage est fait correctement, pas à redire, mais je suis une maniaque des recoins. Les rideaux de ma chambre auraient vraiment mérité un bon lavage. Il faut dire que la ville, en saison sèche, est extrêmement poussiéreuse.
Ceci dit, je suis ravie de mon séjour et si je repasse par Calcutta, je reviendrai sans hésiter.

Very good

I was a business traveler and chose the hotel because it was near my destination.

1. The hotel is renovated on basis of an old housing; the facilities cannot compare with modern hotels.

2. The hotel locates in a narrow road, very crowded and easy to be stuck in daytime, and I had problems with Uber drivers as they were reluctant to drive in.

3. There are constructions in the neighbor, 7am - 10pm, very noisy.

Briefly speaking, if you are a tourist and hope to taste the old colonial living style, it is a good choice. But if you are a business traveler, a modern hotel may be a better choice.

Excellent, good breakfast and the food menu was varied at a reasonable price.
Hotel was convenient for Eden Gardens cricket ground a good 20 min walk away but flat, despite England getting spanked there by 7 wickets it was great experience all the same 😉
The hotel has great history with lots of pictorial items on display, the guests list who have resided there is very interesting.
If and when I’m back in Kolkata I’ll definitely stay here again.

Excellent stay

We like the size and old feel of the bedroom but bathroom could use an upgrade. Neither of us wanted to use the shower
Good breakfast. Friendly all around

Positives:
1) Brought back nostalgia from he days of the British Raj
2) Excellent service people
3) Great kitchen - amazing food.
Very friendly and helpful staff

Areas for improvement:
1) Building is old - over a 100 years old and shows its age. So do the fixtures - chandeliers, lights, carpets, staircase
2) Not very easy to find - as it is located in a very congested area. Lots of one of one way streets

A very historic property with old world charm and facilities. Our room had an unusable shower over a deep bath. Many of the ceilings and walls show signs of decay, but it is an 1783 property!
The main common facilities (dining room and garden cafe area) are well kept and very atmospheric. The food was excellent and the staff are very lovely.
We would stay again, but ensure we were allocated a room with a wlk in shower next time.
The Fairlawn is not for everybody, but if you love history and authenticity, you can't go past it for an experience.

very cozy and unique characteristic hotel feels like you back in time, the staff are very warm, feels like a home away form home .
However would update some of the rooms, a new coat of paint would do alot. the old style and charcter should remain, this is truley unique!!
i will be back for sure and would recommend the place!

The reception staff were helpful and friendly. The dining room staff were excellent. Couldn't ask for better. Good value for money and agood location.

A charming place where you step back in time. Warm, hospitable staff.

Overall an OK stay. Staff kept pressuring about checking out at 11. Not explained.about breakfast.

チェクインの時間より早く着いたのですが、部屋の準備が出来次第チェクインを済ませてくれとても助かりました。ベッドが少しかび臭く感じて残念でした。朝食は、毎日同じような内容のビュフェでしたが美味しくいただきました。配膳も良いサービスでした。フロントの方々をはじめ警備の皆さんもとても親切で気持ち良い滞在ができました。
