I booked a King Bed room at the Travelodge in San Clemente with an Ocean View and a balcony. What I received was very different from what was advertised.

Upon arrival, we immediately noticed that there was no patio or balcony whatsoever, despite the room being listed as having one. The bed also appeared to be significantly smaller than a king. I currently own a king bed, and this was noticeably narrower. It was not identified as a California King, and even a California King should still be wider than a queen — which this bed did not appear to be. The issue was further highlighted by the fact that the “king” bed only had two very thin pillows, which is unusual for a king-sized setup.

I went back to the front desk within five minutes to politely ask for clarification. I began by saying I was confused about what I booked versus what I received, but the female staff member rudely interrupted me, insisting, “That most certainly is a king bed.” When I asked about the balcony listed on my reservation, she snapped back, “But does it say private balcony? It doesn’t, now does it?” — even though there was no option when booking to choose a “private” balcony, only “balcony rooms,” which is what I had reserved.

When I asked for additional pillows, she did not respond in English, spoke to her husband in another language, and handed me pillows without explanation, which felt dismissive and unprofessional.

The hotel was not at capacity during my two-night stay, and rooms with balconies were clearly available. I even checked online again to try to rebook, but there was no separate option for a “private” balcony — only “balcony rooms,” reinforcing that this was misleading at best.

Positives:
• The room was clean
• The bed was reasonably comfortable
• There was an ocean view
• The male staff member was friendly and pleasant

Negatives:
• Misleading room description
• No balcony/patio as advertised
• Rude and unhelpful female staff member
• Extremely noisy location right off a major highway
• Exterior lights remain on all night, making the room very bright even with shades closed

This is a budget motel, and I understand that — but customer service and accurate listings still matter. Due to the misleading booking details, poor handling of the situation, and the overall noise level, I would not stay here again. There are many other low-end motels in better locations with more attentive service.

My advice if you have wish to stay is to request the room with the golf course view as the room side with the ocean view sits next to the freeway and the traffic noise is loud

The front desk staff were extremely available, friendly, and helpful. Good place for the price and proximity to the beach. 6 min drive to San Clemente pier, 15 min walk to the water-front state park! Is definitely dated, but was clean with good air conditioning

I love this place. This will be my go to hotel when I’m in town. Jenny, the manager, is the best.

I appreciate a clean place that makes me feel safe and comfortable… my friend and I were very pleased with how clean the bed, floor and everything else felt. Even the elevator smelled clean. I slept great without any worries and my friend also enjoyed her stay. I would definitely consider staying with them in the future when I return to San Clemente.
