The only thing that went well was that I was able to cancel the reservation. That's it.
To my dismay, and contrary to the photos advertising the hotel when I booked a room there, I arrived to find the place under construction. The registration desk was cover with so much dust I could have written my name in it. Dust from the workers' machines was flying threw the air. They had no air purifiers and nothing else to ameliorate the situation, not even masks. Despite the front desk person saying the rooms were fine, mine was also so dusty I couldn't breathe and had to haul my luggage back downstairs and leave.
Renovation in progress
Assistance with bags
bed and size of room are quite comfortable
ongoing renovations were not mentioned on website. no staff acknowledgements or apologies. And room was Not adequately cleaned. Looks like QA/QC of bathroom renovations has Not been completed - there's loose grout, loose sink faucet handles, dirt and dust alongside beds.
Classic style. Good ice. Neat decor.
Limited restaurant hours. Outdated restaurant. Slow elevators. Lack of smart tv.
Very impressed w the room and neighborhood.
It was in a central location
The room wasn’t clean when we checked in. We requested that it be cleaned and the manager said no one was available to clean it. The next morning we spoke to a maid in the hallway and asked her to please clean and sweep the floor. The floor was absolutely disgusting. With cups, candy wrappers, dirt, trash and nail clippings everywhere! I took a video and have proof. When we returned back to our room, the maid still did not sweep the floor. She only left clean towels. We were so disgusted and did not feel comfortable sleeping in the bed. We tried to find another hotel but everything was booked. We decided to go home a day early and we were told by the hotel manager Alfreda, that she would contact booking.com to issue a full refund.
Location is great.
quite a bit of street noise, particularly the backing truck at 4 am
Location and I liked the room I stayed in.
I felt the price was too much since the place was under construction and looked terrible in the halls and elevators. I didn’t see any room service either. Also, someone on our floor was smoking so much weed day and night and it came into our room at times. Thought there was a no smoking policy. Also the terrace was kind of a shared space with a window from the hall looking in. I didn’t like that. You could walk right up to the neighboring room if you really wanted. Also, there were dirty cigarette butts all over the floor of the terrace.
It’s locations to everything around was good
Bed was uncomfortable to be a updated room sorry hard as a brick
February 2026: We stayed for only 1 night (thank goodness).
Nowhere on the hotel’s web site does it indicate that you will be overpaying to stay in a construction site! Not kidding! We only learned about the ongoing construction via a sign on our way to the elevators after checking in. The elevator had packing blankets hanging in it presumably to protect it from construction materials.
We were getting settled into our room (#1) when we noticed trash in the trashcans and an obviously used robe in the closet. So, a partially cleaned room? Upon calling the front desk we were told that there wasn’t any housekeeping available in the evening so we would be put into a new room. Btw the front desk lady was very pleasant.
Upon entering the new room (#2) we found ourselves in a literal construction site. Holes in walls, unfinished ceiling around sprinklers and fixtures, construction dust on everything, nuts and bolts on the floor, broken chairs on the balcony, a lighted mirror that didn’t light up, and a toilet that barely flushed. By this time we were travel weary and just went to sleep.
We will most definitely NOT be staying in this “4-star hotel” again…what a joke, it’s 2-star at best!
IF you choose to stay here, best of luck! We advise staying at Omni across the street if you like the area.
Great location in charming historic area near Capitol. Personnel are super helpful and friendly. excellent on site private restaurant as well as lots of good restaurants on the same street. Beds, pillows are so comfortable and bathrooms well appointed and large. Renovations underway with expectations of finishing by the end of the month.
Hotel was nice and near the Capitol so we were able to walk. The rooms were very elegant. Everyone at the front desk was very kind. And I used the valet which was convenient. Angel S. Made that process easy!
Angel, who was our valet made our stay more enjoyable. He was “Johnny On The Spot”, but even more so, cordial and welcoming. The rest of the staff was also very welcoming.
I've stayed here many times before. The Berkeley is well located - a short walk to the State Capitol and the General Assembly. The neighborhood of Shockoe Slip is historic - some streets are cobblestone.
I had a beautifully remodeled room - very spacious, very clean. Several eco- friendly features such as motion-sensor lights. Good lighting, lots of electric outlets for recharging all my tech stuff!
But... hot water issue - only two nights with hot water. First night i took a really cold shower!) Maintenancethe next day helped - hot water on nights 2&3 (after running the water in the shower for 6 minutes!) Last night :: lukewarm water. (I heard other guests mention lack of hot water, too)
My keurig did not work that first night or the next morning @ breakfast. No coffee!! (Yes, I could have gotten coffee downstairs, but I was in PJs 🤪 ) Got a different keurig machine the next night. It worked!
Just 3 clothes hangers in the closet - I requested more - the ones they brought had small hanging "hooks" that didn't "fit" on the closet rod.
Noah was friendly and helpful.
Angel got my car and helped me load my numerous bags into the car. Greatly appreciated!
I did try their restaurant early one evening. I was pretty much their only diner. Service was friendly. Food was delicious and servings were generous. (Beet salad, mushroom risotto, passion fruit panna cotta). To bad they weren't keen the next day... never saw them item for breakfast.
Would I stay again? Maybe... but for the price , the issues I encountered made my stay less than wonderful.
