I made this reservation in September 2025 3-nights 4-days to celebrate my husbands birthday. I specifically asked for Beachfront deluxe room with two queen beds. Upon arrival I was told " we upgraded you" - I didn't ask for an upgrade and did not want a king bed. When I inquired I was asked "didn't the manager call you to see if it was okay" and I said no one called me. So when I asked again for the corner room beachfront deluxe room it became apparent this room was NOT available. Also, I was NOT told that there was constructions going on (disruptive) and the pool was closed! Paying over $2200 I expected more. Although the room was clean, the outside patio was dirty and it was NOT a corner room. We ordered two nights take out, and the food was excellent. The room service carts started ~ 6:30 am and were very noisy traveling on the Mexican travertine tile - so much for trying to "sleep in". We won't be back.
My son and I had a great experience with staying here. It is really a family friendly place and they have outdoor fire pits that you can get a scores kit and let the kids roast marshmallows in the evening after playing in the pool or the near by playground.
We have stayed here several times, the staff is amazing. I wish the rooms were more updated and that the distinct smell could be cleaned from it. It just still seems “old”. I really love this place and would stay if it could be updated even more with the bathroom fixtures, walls, and flooring. When I asked if the construction was to update the rooms- they told me it was to update the balconies. I feel like the insides should be updated first. But overall, staying directly on the beach is awesome and the price is great for it!
The room was very quiet, a great bed, wonderful staff and beach view if you stand up. It's great that they except dogs. Since they're remodeling you should know there are less amenities. Until it's remodeled "resort" is a stretch. Luxury rooms is a complete miss for the money. The beach helps make up for that but not enough.
Safe and fun family experience!
Great view of the ocean and spacious and clean rooms. I would definitely recommend this place.
Great place to stay. Really nice location and parking was easy. The downside was the drunk gal at the hotel bar screaming endless profanities at the hotel bar.
Love coming here! Service is great. Staff is friendly. Every is well maintained. Can’t ask for more! Thank you always keeping such a high standard!
This hotel used to be fabulous and a wonderful place to take our family. It has become run down and poorly managed now and after almost 30 years of staying here, we won't come back until it has been restored!
The beach/ocean view was 10/10 and the major reason why we chose this hotel over others in the area. Our balcony was clean and very comfortable, and I spent many enjoyable hours enjoying the view and sea air from it. The room itself was also quite comfortable, though the only bathroom in our 4-person suite was accessed through the separate bedroom. It's not a common problem in hotels with this type of room, and if we'd been staying with friends vs. family it would have been uncomfortable.
The pool and hot tub were not in service during our stay, and while a shuttle was provided to another hotel with those amenities, I wish we had known that the on-site facilities were closed before we arrived.
Overall, though, we thoroughly enjoyed our time at the La Jolla Shores Hotel, and I would stay here again on a future trip to the beach.
Location is good if you want to be at the la jolla shores. But my 3 star rating is based on the following observations:
- Wi-Fi frequently failed and prevented me from joining an online meeting (reception said they cannot do anything and will ask IT to check next day).
- In-room dining stopped taking orders ~45 mins earlier than the time printed on the menu (offered no alternate suggestions either).
- Housekeeping was inconsistent (no water or shower gel on day 1; body lotion appeared half-used on day 1).
- The resort fee of 40 USD per day was not clearly communicated during the booking. As a guest from Europe, this is uncommon and felt misleading, and obviously affects my ability to recommend the hotel to others.
- At the time of writing, I'm awaiting their response on why a small additional charge of < 2 usd was made on my card a day after my checkout without my authorization.
- In an email before my arrival, I pointed out to them that their contact email listed on website's landing page is wrong and the e-mails bounce back. They provided no acknowledgement to this feedback and i just verified today while asking clarification on the billing question that the email still bounces back. No respect to customer feedback or time!!
For the price paid, I expected a much better service.
the location was beautiful, the room was spotless, and the whole atmosphere felt peaceful. the morning and night walks along the beach were perfect, and the food options nearby were incredible. it truly felt like it was going to be a 5 out of 5 stay.
the only reason i cannot give that rating is because of one experience during the trip. halfway through our stay, the hotel began a major construction project that was loud and blocked the front entrance. during that same time, a food order never arrived, and a manager helped me search for it. without me asking for anything, he offered to waive our full resort fee because of the disruption. the waiver appeared on my bill that night. i was like,,, nice.
at checkout though, a different manager said the waiver was only meant for one night, even though it had already been fully removed during the stay. i reached out by email to clarify in extreme detail, they acknowledged a "miscommunication", and ultimately did not honor what was originally promised.
the property itself is wonderful, but the inconsistency in management communication and the lack of follow through left a disappointing final impression. left me with a really bad taste in my mouth.
trust means everything to me when i travel, and in this situation i walked away feeling misled, which overshadowed an otherwise beautiful stay.
The Shores hosted my daughter's wedding the second week of October. I secured a room block and between that and telling most guests about The Shores we had the run of the place for what turned out to be a completely sold out week...(I had guests who hoped to charge their reservation from other locations that could not get a room after visiting pre wedding days! The ENTIRE staff shined the entire week and made all my guests (whether staying there or not) feel at home. The wedding as I found out was one of the largest they had hosted that year so it was a challenge to set up and feed/drink everyone....BEACH wedding right out the back with a grand entrance from the wedding party coming one by one pouring out of the back of the Shores! Ceremony, Happy Hour cocktails and wedding reception was AMAZING. Guest feedback was "where did you find this place "? (Family Fall destination for years)..."Gosh...We should of stayed HERE"..."So much fun this week...we hate to leave"..."Heaven on Earth".... Our party DOMINATED the hotel the entire week....Restaurant, Pool, bar, Beach. Employees were SO appreciative to have folks to serve. The Shores was put to the test and ACED the exam....WE ROCKED her and she held her ground on so many levels....!
Hotel experience was great from many aspects, Large rooms, great location, and most staff (sales, frontdesk etc) were excellent. However we had a bad experience with the Catering/Conference Service Manager. Customer engagement in friendly and cooperative manner was sorely lacking- constant citing of policy, lack of willingness to work with us and a feeling of charging for every little ask was disheartening. We felt that every opportunity to squeeze another buck was a central focus. for that one reason we give the hotel a low rating
Extreme high tides and gray skies were the only drawbacks during my two night stay. As always, the service from cheerful, helpful, personable young people was top notch. Thanks to a special promotion I splurged on an ocean view room for the first time. The balcony was small, but the room was very spacious. Comfy bed, nice toiletries. I have mixed feelings about the food, which I've always felt was overpriced. I love having a cocktail and meal at the ocean view bar.
Located on an iconic beach and a block from fun shops and restaurants, this hotel doesn’t need to try hard, and it doesn’t. Elevators smell. Hot tub has a foamy head like an Irish ale. Front desk is powerless to make change for the deeply hidden guest laundry or for tipping maids. Ambivalence reigns. Can you get a late checkout. Maybe. Probably not. Is the restaurant good? “It’s decent.” Rooms are dark and tired. Whole place needs a refresh. Would I stay there again. Maybe. Probably not.
Location is great! Room horrible!!!! We were in the garden view room the room Location itself was fine. The smell of the room was horrible!!! It smelled like mold! The air conditioner made noise all night and didnt help with the smell or dosnt keep the room at a cooler temp. Rooms needs to be updated! I would not stay here again for the price I paid you except nicer cleaner rooms. Food was just okay nothing great about it just the Location. The drinks from the bar just okay, the breakfast was pretty good even tho the waiter got my order wrong I just decided to eat it because I hate sending food back. The golden hour latte I had in the morning was the only thing I truly enjoyed from this place. I think I can be pretty far and open minded when it comes to reviewing places but this place I will not be staying at again you pay over 1,500.00 to stay at a nicer place for a couple days and this is not what I expected to get. Service was rude I was denied moving rooms but to be honest the other room my friends were in smelled the same way and the rooms they were cleaning while you passed by smelled the same way.
Love this hotel! The king room with kitchenette is very spacious and clean, love their beach services especially because it makes packing for the trip so much easier especially with little ones (the hotel provide beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, and boogie boards!). The lounge areas/patio areas are fun and have a foosball table, ping pong tables, giant jenga & connect four, and even patio tables with fire pits. Such a relaxing spot and great location (in walking distance from a bunch of delicious restaurants, cafes, and dessert spots, as well as tide pools!). The hotel was also able to accommodate our request to stay in a specific room again this year which was a nice plus! The Shores restaurant (located in the hotel) has really tasty weekend brunch options, we were surprised at how delicious everything was & we also got to have a beautiful view of the beach!
We had a wonderful experience - room had water view and was very easy to access the beach. I was traveling alone with two kids and felt very safe and was satisfied with our room.
In my opinion, there’s not a better destination in the world for a water lover. We live close by but wanted to stay at the beach for a few days. We snorkel scuba dove served stand-up Paddle swim with the sharks and visited with friends. We had a campfire on the beach and woke up to the sound of waves. Perfect in every way and a lot less expensive than flying to Hawaii and renting all of our equipment.
went for a family wedding at the resort . stayed at the shores. rooms definitely dated but clean. bathrooms could use some updating, toilets are very low. all staff were very nice!! took advantage of their shuttle service the first day to go to get snacks and drinks. was difficult after that to reserve shuttle during the weekend. definitely plan ahead to reserve it! the food was wonderful. enjoyed the pool area too. we were usually at the beach and tennis club pool. upon checkout there was a charge on my bill from the clubhouse that was not mine. check your bill!
