There was a particular smell once I entered the building. Somehow was even stronger, if not different once I got to my room. The area was nice, considering Oakland's reputation. But since it was in the downtown area, it was easy to settle in. Being close to the bus and bus system was benefiting. Not a wide range of restaurants though. Or at least some that stay open past a certain time. I suppose that's because of the homeless people in the area. But not at many as other say there are.
Overall, if you manage to keep to yourself and go about your business, you can have a good time residing in there for a night or two.
The property is old but beautiful. The staff was very friendly and helpful since there was a little trouble with check in.
I wanted to stay in a non-chain independent hotel. Unfortunately, this hotel has not been maintained in years. Missing paint, ancient elevator, very old fixtures, very old rugs, no proper bathrooms (sinks in the bedroom), not even glasses (plastic or otherwise) in the rooms. There was only one staff person at the hotel (same person all day and night). She was great and helpful, but the situation was odd. Also, they said there would be breakfast (coffee and pastry), but there was never anything there despite the time in the morning. There was never even a place where it could have been ....
Front desk was the best. One of the front desk team members was the host, the bartender and front desk. Hard working they should be glad to have such a great staff
Good Place to stay
Great accommodations!
The staff was helpful
The room was ok but there was no view and the lights kept flickering on and off. I felt like I was in Santa Rita jail
smelled like urine outside the building, no breakfast except pastry and coffee, no open bar except on Friday and Saturday
Friendly staff, clean room and handy to public transport.
Awesome old
beautiful building, friendly staff, clean room and safe convenient location!
Wasn’t the worst — rooms were clean and it’s a cool old building. But there was this awful smell throughout the whole 3rd floor. I can’t really describe it, but if you are sensitive to smells this isn’t the place for you. Staff was nice. They seemed confused and it took a while for us to check in when we arrived around 10pm. My blanket had a burn hole in it that I noticed as soon as I walked into the room. It seemed clean, though, so I didn’t mind that. It also took a few tries sometimes to get the toilet to flush all the way.
I didn’t really mind any of that except for the smell — that really made the stay hard to enjoy.
Still, if you are just looking for a roof over your head for a few nights, Washington Inn does the trick.
Everything great! However check out could be handled a little more professionally. Hotel receptionist was standing outside talking to a friend oblivious of what’s going on inside. A cleaning lady had to call her to come inside to assist me. Receptionist a little too loud and obnoxious. I’m sure I’m not the only one that mentioned this.
.
I was terribly disappointed by the Washington Inn. The website indicates a charming old hotel with a restaurant, however in fact the restaurant is closed and the facility is old and in disrepair (patches in the carpet, doors from closet missing, scuffs all along the baseboards in the hallway). The bones of this place are amazing, however it is massively un-cared for. The staff were pleasant and helpful enough, though there was only ever one person on site. Breakfast was a coffee pump with dixie cups and muffins wrapped in plastic. The room smelled funny too (like industrial cleaner of some unrecognized variety). I ended up at the Graduate Berkeley for the same price and it was beyond charming with an awesome restaurant (Harry's) and a great cafe (Pointdexters), both which we received free drinks at as part of our stay. Amazing!
The staff at the Washington Inn is amazing! Always so friendly and accommodating.
