Beautiful lobby. Friendly staff
The area just down the road from the hotel did not feel very safe. Room was a little cramped.
Good location. Professional staff. Comfortable room and bed. Clean.
Definitely worth walking down the 12 stairwell to see their pictures as soon many US presidents have stayed here.
The location was very convenient, all the staff was more than accommodating.
Bathroom door failed to close fully and lock, the ac didn’t get super cold but I wasn’t as big of an issue.
The Benson is a beautiful hotel located in the heart of Portland. You can bike, walk, drive or take any other means of transportation to quickly be where you want to be in Portland. Plus, the hotel is beautiful and the beds are comfortable!
No bones to pick!
I enjoyed the location. It was in walking distance of a good selection of eateries and shops. The staff was kind and welcoming, check-in, and check-out were easy and fast. The rooms themselves were clean, and the shower water was also quite hot (which I love). The valet was quick and convenient.
The Benson was an absolute win on my first ever trip to Portland.
From the second I pulled up, the experience was easy. Valet was smooth, there was plenty of room to arrive without feeling like you were trying to find a place to squeez in, and the valet team was consistently kind, accommodating, and quick both on arrival and whenever I needed my car.
The hotel itself is gorgeous. Not fake-luxury gorgeous. Real, classic, old-school gorgeous. The kind of place that makes you stop for a second when you walk into the lobby and think, "Wow!" The architecture and design have that turn-of-the-century grandeur that feels rich and elegant without being stuffy. The lobby in particular is one of the most impressive I have seen anywhere - dramatic ceilings, beautiful woodwork, and a mirror fit for a French King.
Check-in was simple and painless. My room was spacious, comfortable, and had one of those beds where you lie down and immediately question what the heck kind of mattress is this, and where can I get one. I also had a large executive desk, which made it a genuinely cozy and functional place to get some work done.
The gym was another pleasant surprise - and not one of those “fitness center” situations where they give you a treadmill, two dumbbells, and a broken water mater. This was a real gym. Big, well-equipped, lots of room, and even two Pelotons.
But the real highlight of the stay was the staff, especially Tara at the bar.
On my first night, I was still running on East Coast time and had some time to kill before dinner with friends, so I grabbed a seat at the beautiful bar and just wanted a quick bite. Instead, I got a genuinely memorable experience. Tara was warm, funny, welcoming, and one of those people who instantly makes a place feel better. We ended up chatting about Portland, Irish dancing, and the history of the hotel. Another night, she recommended dinner for me and every single suggestion landed - appetizer, entree, bread pudding, all of it. Easy 'clean plate club' FTW.
Breakfast also deserves a mention. Try the yogurt and fruit. That sounds like an aggressively boring recommendation until you eat it and realize the fruit is somehow perfect.
The neighborhood was great too. Easy walking distance to all kinds of excellent spots, including Maurice (Small hole-in-the-wall French place you'll be blown away by) and Powell’s, the world's largest bookstore, is basically right there too.
All in, I loved my stay at The Benson. Beautiful hotel, great location, excellent amenities, and a staff that knows how to make a place feel special. I would happily stay there again.
This hotel is beautiful. It is very nicely decorated in an upgraded historical fashion. You are welcomed with beautiful chandeliers in the lobby, sitting area and restaurant. The moment we walked in, we were greeted by 2 very kind ladies at the front desk and checked in quickly. The elevators are so much fun with mirrors on the doors, perfect for selfies and before and after pictures.
My son and I visited during spring break. We enjoyed the clean and spacious room with very comfortable beds. The hotel is perfectly located in downtown Portland near coffee shops and restaurants. It's walking distance from Powell's Bookstore and the Waterfront Park. Only a 10 minute drive to Washington Park, the Rose Test Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Hoyt Arboretum.
During our stay we enjoyed breakfast at The Palm. Breakfast options were great and the food was delicious. Coffee is really good. I believe it is starbucks. Kathryn made breakfast and our stay extra special. She was very attentive and friendly. Even offered some tips and suggestions for our visit. We absolutely enjoyed her kind gesture and service.
There was a night of jazz during one night and it sounded great but we were too exhausted to stay downstairs.
Complimentary coffee is offered for guests everyday.
All in all, we fell in love with Portland and will definitely be staying here again.
The first time my family stayed at The Benson was three years ago; we were impressed with the ambience, location and service. Since then, The Benson has become a home base for my family and I when we are in Portland. The baseline expectations are met, but beyond that, The Benson has offered a comforting and comfortable space to do life while away from home. Yes, the amenities are excellent; the building itself is both beautiful and dignified, my high expectations of room cleanliness and comfort are exceeded, the location is convenient and familiar and everything is walkable and available. More importantly, The Benson crew is the heartbeat of this hotel. They are unfailingly kind and attentive and not just because "it's their job." They are people that are perceptive, who gently and intentionally cultivate a place and experience that welcomes and comforts you when you're in a place that is not your home. That is what makes this hotel special. Hotels are never quite "home" but The Benson is a place that offers comfort and ease when you are visiting Portland.
This was our second visit to the Benson Hotel. Everything about this place is professional and helpful. Front desk girls suggested fun things to do and helped us understand the bus system. Also printed our boarding passes on our departure.
They had a Weds. nite jazz combo which was very enjoyable at cocktail hour.
Had breakfast at the Palm Court. If you eat there, hopefully you will get to meet the waiter Bobby. He has been there I think about 45 years or so and is a wealth of information on the history, famous people who he has served, and was quite inspirational. Also visit the stairwell that contains historical photographs of the people and events that made the Benson what it is today. Corner room was exceptional. Highly suggest this establishment when in Portland
In town for NCAA March Madness had to stay at the Benson to check out Damian Lillards new bar downstairs. Did not disappoint. The Benson is a special spot. Bobby in the lobby restaurant for breakfast provides impeccable service. Athletes and musicians frequent the Benson. It’s a great hotel downtown top 3.
So clean and peaceful wonderful stay
The team at the Benson Hotel “ Palm
court,”. Outstanding! John and Richard made my gathering exceptional. Celebrating my 50th at a place (Benson Hotel) my mother worked back in the 60’s and 70’s. John & Richard, very attentive to my party of 10. They made sure each person was well taken care of and had what they needed. Food brought out hot and fresh. Much appreciation to the servers, cook, bartender and dishwasher of the Palm Court team at the Benson Hotel! Thank you, Tamra
Beautiful hotel with the lobby decorated for Christmas! It was a perfect place to start the family holiday
Parking was a little expensive
Overall a well suited hotel and experience for all guests. My biggest gripe was the parking situation/ cost. Paying an extra 30 dollars for using the same garage the company suggests, minus the valet is not in a consumer’s favor. However Mr. Bobby was the saving grace as far as his exceptional service and consumer engagement, he hold true value to this establishment!!
If you’re interested in a European getaway without the high costs, you’ll appreciate the Benson! We had such a wonderful stay and the staff here is amazing.
We stayed in the corner room and it was spacious, clean, and comfortable. My only complaint about the room would probably be the bathroom sink. The faucet was very short so every time I washed my hands I kept hitting the sink bowl. But this is a minor issue.
The hotel is located in DT Portland and you’re in walking distance to many eateries and shops.
We didn’t have a car, but from what I can see there was valet service.
The lounge area was so beautifully crafted and maintained that so many of my friends thought I was in Europe!
TLDR; will be returning here for my next trip to Portland
