Great hotel near bus terminal as base for Kumamoto
Pros:

The property is right in the Sakuramachi mall building, allowing you to come out and get straight away into shopping or go outside the city, nearby Kumamoto Castle. The location was great for exploring and departing, right from the morning. I was very happy to immediately see the old cedar and walk towards Kumamoto Castle.

The lobby elevator brings you all the way to the high floors and from there you take a second elevator to go down to your room, so the staff always checks who comes in, and card is required.

The staff was very nice and welcoming: not only they replied to my message about finding vegan places, they also welcomed me nicely. I received also a small present, which was however fish dashi so not vegan, so I left it in the hotel for the next person to have a double treat and be happy about the stay. Possibly a note about these kind of details, or alternatives to propose to customers, could be a nice present to gift, but I absolutely didn’t mind, I appreciated the kindness shown by the staff and all I interacted with.

The hotel is also close to the busy street across on the opposite side (walks a few minutes), bringing you right into the lively face of Kumamoto (although much of it is a very ‘entertainment’ type of street, so be wary of being there too long at night)

Cons:

The chargers at first didn’t work well, but that was quickly solved (maybe a temporary issue). Maybe one actual issue was that the entrance hallway of the room was genuinely small for my big luggage to stay, but there was no other place as everything was close knitted. The view goes right outside, so ensure you aren’t naked and the curtains are closed!

What I actually was surprised about was that the hotel forces a policy of cleaning on the 4th day. My understanding was that it wouldn’t affect me, as I had check-in with no cleaning and then 4th night would be the last one, but instead I ended up with a cleaner entering and mentioning the hotel policy as I hurriedly dressed myself.

She was by no means at fault as this was the hotel policy, but either I misunderstood it or it wasn’t explained fully from the brochure. In addition it was the day the buses were delayed, so I came back very late, didn’t sleep much and ended up awoken very early, resulting in a very drowsy last day.

I might understand why the hotel does it for cleaning reason, but what I would recommend since all the towels were promptly exchanged and attached to the door is to have the customer asked if it’s possible to do the cleaning when he’s out regardless of the do not disturb, or notify him/her as reminder that the next day the mandatory cleaning will be done. Probably my fault, and I assume it’s due to very bad past experiences they got with unhygienic customers, but it was the only thing I felt weirded about with the hotel.

The mall in Sakuramachi closes at 20:00, sometimes slightly earlier, so if you plan to visit shops when you return you have to do it before that time. Regardless the hotel stays functional, which is a very good point in their favor.

Pros:

The location waz excellent, it was located practically inside the mall of sakuramachi which gave you direct access to the convinience stores, restaurants, etc. The stop of the tram was a couple of minutes and the bus station was in the same sakura-machi. The shopping area was also crossing the street. The room had a beautiful view of the kumamoto castle.
