Pros:

Let's start with the Sonesta hotel is not located in Yorkville. It's west of Yorkville in the no man's land between Avenue Road and Spadina. It's still a nice location, but the name is misleading. The hotel you are probably thinking of when you hear the inflated Royal Yorkville name is the very elegant Hazleton Hotel. This is not it. It's a generic Marriott style phony wood and marble mid-tier property.

Cons:

What is difficult about the Yorkville Sonesta is the misleading pricing. On Booking.com one expects a pre-paid stay to include access to the facilities and not to face surcharges. Guests at the Yorkville Sonesta are expected to pay additional site-access fees on a daily basis, and that's before getting to access to the pool. Every request is an opportunity to cash-in again. When I requested to have the use of the room fridge and to avoid any accidental traps (I was travelling with children) for lifting a cab out and putting it back, I was told that to allow use of the fridge is a $50 surcharge.

Some guests might be okay with these extra charges. I am not. Exhausted, at 8pm in their lobby the day before Christmas we had to seek other accommodation on our big Toronto trip.

In favour of the Sonesta, they promised me a refund and did keep their word. Some people have enjoyed their stay here. The surcharge system on top of Booking.com rates was a shock to me and is something of which to be aware.

Great stay, great location, but not cheap
Pros:

Always a great stay. Large rooms, good amount of storage, very large bathrooms with great storage. Comfortable beds and excellent location.

Cons:

The rooms are dark, prices vary a lot depending on when you need a room. You can't control the thermostat very well, but you can open a window. Breakfast is expensive.
